Explore Zanzibar’s most famous marine reserve on a private boat trip from Nungwi Beach. This full-day excursion to Mnemba Reef includes snorkeling on coral reefs, a stop at a natural sandbank, and the chance to see wild dolphins along the coast.
Your trip begins at Nungwi Beach where you meet the local crew at the Zanzibar Watersports Center. After check-in, a small transfer boat takes you to your private vessel anchored offshore.
Once underway, the boat heads toward Mnemba Island Marine Reserve, one of the best snorkeling locations in Zanzibar. The reef system surrounding the island offers clear water and abundant marine life including reef fish, coral formations and occasional sea turtles.
The boat anchors near the reef where guests can snorkel above shallow coral gardens and explore the lagoon areas. Snorkeling equipment is provided and the crew assists with safety and guidance in the water.
During the cruise, there is a good chance of seeing dolphins that frequently move through the Mnemba area. While sightings are common, they cannot be guaranteed.
The trip also includes a stop at a natural sandbank near Mnemba. These temporary islands appear depending on tide conditions and provide a calm place to swim, relax and take photos surrounded by shallow turquoise water.
After spending time exploring the reef and sandbank, the boat returns along the northern Zanzibar coastline toward Nungwi Beach.
Mnemba Island lies off the northeast coast of Zanzibar and is surrounded by a protected marine conservation area. The reefs around the island are known for clear visibility and diverse marine life.
Nungwi Beach, the departure point, is one of Zanzibar’s main coastal villages and a traditional centre for dhow boat building and marine excursions.
No previous snorkeling experience is required, although basic swimming ability is recommended.
The tour is not suitable for travellers who are pregnant and the boat is not wheelchair accessible. Infants must sit on laps during the trip.
Local captains operate traditional boats designed for Zanzibar’s coastal waters. Private trips allow groups to explore Mnemba Reef at their own pace while avoiding crowded group tours.
