Sail from Kendwa Beach on a traditional wooden dhow to explore the coral reefs of Mnemba Atoll, one of Zanzibar’s best snorkeling areas. This full-day trip includes two reef snorkeling stops, a freshly prepared Swahili lunch onboard, and drinks while cruising along the northern Zanzibar coastline.
The day begins at Kendwa Beach where guests meet the crew and board a traditional dhow. After a short introduction and safety briefing, the boat departs along Zanzibar’s northern coastline.
The dhow sails past Nungwi, a fishing village known for traditional boat building and clear coastal waters. Dolphins are often seen in this area, especially in the morning.
The first stop takes place near Mnemba Atoll, a protected marine reserve known for coral reefs and abundant tropical fish. Guests can snorkel in clear, shallow waters while the crew assists with equipment and guidance.
After snorkeling, the dhow anchors in calm water for lunch prepared by the crew. The meal typically includes vegetable curry, basmati rice and tropical fruit served with drinks.
A second snorkeling stop follows at another reef location within the Mnemba Atoll area, offering another chance to explore coral formations and marine life.
In the afternoon, the dhow sails back toward Kendwa Beach while guests relax on deck and enjoy the views of Zanzibar’s coastline.
Mnemba Atoll lies just off the northeast coast of Zanzibar. The surrounding reef system forms a marine conservation area with clear water, coral formations and diverse marine life.
The region is one of Zanzibar’s most reliable snorkeling locations due to its sheltered reef structure and calm conditions.
No previous snorkeling experience is required. Basic swimming ability is recommended.
The experience is not suitable for travellers who are pregnant. The dhow is not wheelchair accessible and infants cannot sit on laps.
