Once you’ve mastered the basics of surfing, the next step is to refine your technique and start gaining confidence in bigger waves. This improver group lesson is ideal for anyone who has surfed a few times or wants to progress to better board control, turning, and paddling out to the back of the waves.
The session starts at the surf school base overlooking South Fistral, where you’ll meet your instructor and be fitted with a wetsuit, board, and boots if needed. After a warm-up and a safety briefing, your instructor will review essential surf theory, including positioning, paddling, and reading waves, to prepare you for in-water practice.
Once in the sea, you’ll focus on improving core skills such as paddling out, catching waves consistently, and executing a smoother pop-up. Participants will also start working on basic turning techniques and trimming along the wave face, with plenty of friendly in-water guidance from the instructor to refine your style and build confidence.
By the end of the two-hour session, participants typically notice marked improvement in control and wave selection. The lesson is designed to challenge you just enough to progress, while maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all ability levels within the group.
Fistral Beach is one of the UK’s top surf spots, offering consistent waves that are perfect for those moving beyond beginner-level surfing. The wide sandy beach allows plenty of space for practice and controlled progression.
The surf school is positioned above South Fistral with direct access to the water, along with indoor changing rooms, hot showers, and secure lockers. This makes it easy to focus on the lesson and enjoy your time on the beach without worrying about logistics.
Participants should already have basic surfing experience, including catching small waves and performing a pop-up. Swimming ability is essential for safety in the sea.
The minimum age is 7, with under 10s requiring adult supervision. Participants must complete an online waiver and check in 15 minutes before the session starts.
The centre is a Surfing England Centre of Excellence with fully qualified instructors who are trained to guide improvers through the next steps of surfing progression. Each participant receives individual feedback to help refine their technique and confidence.
Instructors are lifeguard trained and DBS checked, ensuring safety while providing professional, friendly coaching. Small group sizes allow for personalised attention and a supportive learning environment, helping you take your surfing to the next level.
This session is aimed at surfers who have already had some experience, such as a few lessons or time in the water on their own. Participants should be comfortable catching small waves and performing a basic pop-up.
It’s perfect for those wanting to progress beyond beginner skills, refine their technique, and start practising board control, turning, and paddling out to the back of the waves under expert guidance.
The minimum age is 7 years old, and children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. The session is structured to accommodate a mix of ages while keeping the learning environment safe and supportive.
Older children and adults benefit equally from the personalised instruction, with all participants grouped by ability so the pace suits everyone’s skill level.
All necessary equipment is provided, including a wetsuit, surfboard, and boots if required. This ensures that each participant is fully prepared to practise safely and comfortably.
Participants should bring swimwear to wear under the wetsuit and a towel for afterwards. Lockers are available for personal items, and it’s recommended to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during the session.
Groups are kept small, with a maximum instructor-to-student ratio of 1:8. This allows for personalised attention, more time in the water, and faster skill progression for each participant.
Small groups also mean instructors can monitor safety closely and provide continuous feedback to ensure everyone develops correct technique and confidence in the water.
The lesson focuses on improving paddling, positioning, catching waves consistently, refining your pop-up, and practising basic turning and trimming techniques.
Participants receive in-water coaching, allowing them to apply theory directly on the waves. Friendly guidance helps learners correct mistakes and build confidence in handling unbroken waves and paddling out safely.
The improver session runs for two hours, which is long enough to review theory, practise new techniques, and receive detailed feedback from the instructor without becoming fatigued.
This duration also allows for warm-up exercises, equipment briefing, and a final recap of progress, so participants leave feeling confident and ready to continue improving independently.
