🏜️ What to Expect

After collection from your hotel, the group heads out to the red dunes for an hour of guided jeep dune bashing, weaving over the tall dunes with an experienced desert driver. Once back on flatter ground, sandboarding and a short camel ride round out the main activities, with the option to add a dune buggy ride or upgrade to the evening camp for dinner and entertainment.

Guides pace the dune bashing to suit the group in the vehicle, easing off for anyone who prefers a gentler ride and picking up the pace for those after more of a challenge.

📍 Location

The red dunes around Al Madam rise higher and glow a deeper colour than the desert closer to Dubai, a result of the iron oxide content in the sand. The terrain here is well suited to off-road driving, with long ridges and steep faces that make for a varied dune bashing route.

The surrounding area sits on the edge of Sharjah's desert region, within reach of small camel farms and quiet stretches of open sand. The contrast between the dunes and the city skyline visible in the distance on the drive out is part of what makes the trip feel like a proper change of scene, even on a half-day outing.

✅ Prerequisites

No prior experience with off-road vehicles is needed, as the jeep is driven by a professional guide throughout. Anyone prone to motion sickness should be aware that dune bashing involves sharp turns and sudden dips, so it's worth mentioning this before setting off in case you'd prefer to sit further forward in the vehicle.

The sandboarding and camel ride are gentle by comparison and suit most ages and fitness levels, including children from six years old. Loose clothing and a willingness to get a little sandy will help you get the most out of both activities.

⭐ Why Choose Us

Drivers who run the dune bashing route know exactly how far to push the ride for different groups, keeping things comfortable for nervous passengers while still delivering a proper off-road experience for those who want it. The combination of jeep, sandboarding and a camel stop is put together to flow well as a single afternoon rather than feeling like separate add-ons.

For anyone who wants to make more of the day, the optional buggy ride and evening camp upgrade extend the same well-organised approach into the evening, with the same attention to safety and pacing.

FAQs:

Will the dune bashing make me feel sick?

Dune bashing involves quick turns and dips over the sand, which can feel similar to a roller coaster and does not suit everyone equally well. If you know you get travel sick easily, it's worth mentioning this to the driver before setting off, as sitting further forward in the vehicle can help. Drivers are experienced at reading how a group is coping and will ease off the pace if anyone seems uncomfortable, so it is not an all-or-nothing experience.

Is this suitable for young children?

The minimum age for this trip is 6 years old, and the sandboarding and camel ride in particular are gentle enough for younger participants. Dune bashing itself involves more movement, so it's worth considering whether your child is comfortable with a bumpier ride before booking. Families are welcome, and the mix of a slower camel ride alongside the more energetic dune bashing means there is usually something for most ages to enjoy.

What does the optional buggy add-on involve?

The buggy option gives you a 30 minute ride in a desert buggy built for one driver and up to three passengers, so one person takes the wheel while the rest enjoy the ride. It runs alongside the main jeep dune bashing rather than replacing it, giving you a different way to experience the dunes. If you would like to drive yourself, let the team know when booking, as this needs to be arranged in advance.

What happens if I choose the evening camp upgrade?

Upgrading to the evening camp extends the day with a visit to a desert camp for a BBQ buffet dinner alongside local snacks and drinks. The evening typically includes entertainment such as belly dancing and a fire show, giving a fuller taste of desert hospitality once the sun goes down. The camp portion runs after the main dune bashing and sandboarding activities, so you get both the daytime adventure and an evening wind-down in one trip.

What should I wear?

Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are recommended for getting in and out of the jeep and for the sandboarding session, along with clothing you don't mind getting a little dusty. A light jacket is useful if you're staying into the evening, as temperatures drop once the sun sets. Sunglasses help with glare and blowing sand during the dune bashing, and a hat is a good idea if you're out during the warmer parts of the day.

How long does the whole trip take?

The core trip, including pickup and drop-off, runs to around 4 hours, covering the jeep dune bashing, sandboarding and camel ride. Choosing the evening camp upgrade extends the day further into the evening to include dinner and entertainment. Exact timings depend on where in Dubai you are staying and how far the drive out to Al Madam takes from your hotel.

Is previous experience needed for the camel ride?

No experience is necessary. The camel is led by a handler for the short ride, so you simply sit and enjoy the movement rather than controlling the animal yourself. It's a slower, calmer activity compared with the dune bashing, making it a good way to unwind between the more active parts of the day.

Can I take photos during the dune bashing?

It's best to keep both hands free while the jeep is moving over the dunes, so photos are better taken during the stops the driver builds into the route. These pauses are chosen for their views and give everyone a chance to capture the dunes safely. A phone case or wrist strap is a sensible precaution for the bumpier sections, even when the vehicle is stationary.

What happens in poor weather?

This part of the desert rarely sees conditions that disrupt activities, and the trip runs as planned on almost all dates. On the rare occasion that strong wind or dust makes conditions unsafe, the team may adjust the plan or get in touch to discuss options. Checking the forecast for your date and dressing in layers is a sensible precaution, particularly if you're adding the evening camp.

Do I need to book the buggy or camp upgrade in advance?

Yes, the buggy ride and the evening camp are both optional additions that should be arranged in advance rather than decided on the day, since spaces and timings depend on the group's plans. Selecting your preference in good time also helps the team organise the right vehicles and camp arrangements. If you're unsure which option suits you, the team can talk through what each add-on involves before you confirm.
