🏜️ What to Expect

After pickup, the group heads to Al Madam where drivers take the controls of a 1000cc dune buggy, with passengers riding along for the same route across the towering red dunes. Once the driving is done, a sandboarding session and a short camel ride add a slower-paced contrast before everyone moves on to the evening camp.

The day finishes at a Bedouin-style camp with live entertainment and a BBQ buffet dinner, rounding off the desert time with food and a show rather than heading straight back to the city.

📍 Location

Al Madam lies within the red dune belt on the edge of Sharjah, where the dunes rise higher and steeper than the desert closer to Dubai itself. The powerful sand colour and the scale of the terrain make it a favoured spot for off-road driving of this kind, giving drivers plenty of variety across the route.

Further into the desert, the camp sits away from the main road, surrounded by open sand and quiet at night once the buggies have finished for the day. The shift from daytime driving to an evening camp setting is part of what gives the outing its shape, moving from an active start to a more relaxed close.

✅ Prerequisites

Drivers need to be at least 16 years old and should feel comfortable handling a vehicle over uneven ground, since the buggy is more powerful than a standard quad bike and covers rougher terrain. A valid driving licence is not required for the buggy itself, but a reasonable level of confidence behind the wheel makes for a smoother experience.

Passengers of any age from the centre's general minimum can ride along without needing to drive, and the sandboarding and camel ride afterwards suit a wider range of abilities. Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended throughout the day.

⭐ Why Choose Us

Guides who brief drivers before the buggy run take the time to explain the controls properly rather than rushing through a quick demonstration, which matters given how much more powerful these buggies are than a typical quad bike. The route is set to make the most of the dunes while keeping less experienced drivers comfortable.

Rounding the day off with a proper camp evening, rather than a rushed drop-off straight after driving, means the day builds naturally from an active afternoon into a relaxed evening with dinner and entertainment.

FAQs:

Do I need a driving licence to drive the buggy?

A standard driving licence is not required to drive the dune buggy, but drivers must be at least 16 years old and confident enough to handle a more powerful vehicle than a typical quad bike. Guides run through the controls thoroughly before anyone sets off. If you would rather not drive yourself, you're welcome to ride as a passenger instead, so younger members of your group or anyone who prefers not to drive can still take part in the buggy section.

How many people can ride in one buggy?

Each buggy seats one driver and up to three passengers, so a group of four can travel together in a single vehicle. This makes it a sociable way to experience the dunes compared with individual quad bikes, since everyone rides as one unit. If your group is larger than four, additional buggies are used so nobody misses out on the driving or riding experience.

Is the buggy more powerful than a quad bike?

Yes, the buggy used on this trip is a 1000cc vehicle, which is considerably more powerful than a standard quad bike, and handles the steeper dunes with more ease as a result. This also means the driving briefing takes a little longer to make sure drivers are comfortable before setting off. If you're deciding between this and a quad bike safari, the buggy suits those who want a bit more vehicle underneath them, while a quad bike gives a more direct, individual riding feel.

What happens during the evening camp?

The evening camp includes a BBQ buffet dinner with a mix of dishes, along with live entertainment that typically runs through the evening. It's a chance to sit down, eat and relax after the more active parts of the day. The camp setting is away from the main road, so once the sun goes down it has a noticeably calmer atmosphere than the buggy driving and sandboarding earlier on.

Is this suitable for nervous drivers?

Guides take extra care briefing anyone who seems less confident, and the route can be adjusted in pace to suit the driver rather than everyone going at the same speed. It is normal to feel a little nervous the first time you get behind the wheel of a buggy. If you decide once you arrive that you'd rather not drive, you can switch to being a passenger instead, so there's no pressure to drive if you change your mind.

What should I wear?

Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are important for controlling the buggy pedals safely, along with clothing you don't mind getting dusty. A light layer is worth packing for the evening camp, since temperatures drop once the sun sets. Sunglasses or goggles help with sand and glare during the driving section, and a scarf or buff can help if you're sensitive to dust.

Is there a weight or size limit for driving the buggy?

Drivers need to be tall enough to reach the pedals and controls comfortably and confident enough to manage a vehicle of this size, though there is no fixed weight limit stated for this trip. If you have any concerns about fit or comfort, it's worth mentioning this when you book. Passengers of a wider range of sizes can usually ride comfortably, since the passenger seats don't require the same reach as the driver's position.

How long is the drive out to Al Madam?

The transfer time depends on where in Dubai you're staying, but the drive out to Al Madam typically takes under an hour from most central hotels. This is included within the overall 5.5 hour duration of the trip. Guides keep the group updated on timings during the pickup so you have a clear sense of how the afternoon and evening will unfold.

What happens if the weather is poor?

Desert conditions in this area are generally settled, and the trip runs as planned on the vast majority of dates. In the rare case that strong wind or dust makes driving unsafe, the team may adjust the itinerary or get in touch to discuss the options. It's worth checking the forecast ahead of your date and dressing in layers, since the evening camp can feel noticeably cooler than the afternoon heat.

Can I bring a camera on the buggy?

Driving the buggy takes full attention, so it isn't practical to hold a camera while at the wheel, though passengers have more freedom to take photos during the ride. Guides build in stops at scenic points along the route where drivers can safely park and take pictures too. A secure strap or pocket is a sensible way to carry a phone during the bumpier sections of the drive, even when the buggy is stationary.
