Starting surfing for the first time can feel like a big step, but with expert guidance you’ll quickly feel comfortable in the water. This beginner-friendly session is focused on building confidence, learning the basics, and making sure you enjoy your first taste of catching waves.
The lesson begins on the sand with a fun and relaxed introduction to your surfboard, covering the basics of stance, balance, and safety. Your instructor will explain how to read the beach environment, identify safe surf zones, and practise paddling positions before heading into the water.
Once in the sea, you’ll start catching small, manageable waves under close supervision. The focus is on gradually building your confidence — beginning with lying down and gliding on waves before moving on to attempts at standing up. With plenty of encouragement and tips along the way, you’ll leave the session having experienced the buzz of surfing and a solid foundation to continue learning.
Lessons take place at Fistral Beach in Newquay, one of the most famous surf beaches in the UK. The beach offers consistent waves, perfect for beginners to practise safely while still getting the real surfing experience.
The area is also well set up for visitors, with parking, cafés, and facilities nearby, making it easy to spend a full day at the beach before or after your lesson.
Participants must be able to swim confidently as part of the activity will take place in waist-to-chest-deep water. No previous surfing experience is required.
Children from the age of 7 are welcome to join, though under 10s will need to be accompanied in the group by a participating adult for extra reassurance.
The centre is run by qualified surf coaches who are experienced in teaching absolute beginners in a supportive and enjoyable way. Small group sizes ensure everyone gets individual feedback and time with the instructor.
Safety, fun, and progress are at the heart of every lesson, so whether you’re on your own, with friends, or bringing the kids, you’ll leave with new skills and great memories of your first surf session.
No prior experience is needed to join this lesson. It is specifically designed for complete beginners, those who have never had formal instruction, or anyone returning to surfing after a break. The session provides a structured introduction to the sport, starting from the very basics.
Participants will receive step-by-step guidance both on the beach and in the water. You will learn surf theory, how to handle equipment safely, and how to apply these skills on small waves under the supervision of a qualified instructor.
The minimum age for group lessons is 7 years old. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult, ensuring extra support and safety while participating in the session.
Lessons are suitable for both children and adults, with teaching adapted to suit different age groups. Everyone progresses at their own pace, so no one is rushed, and the learning environment remains safe and encouraging.
All necessary equipment is provided, including a wetsuit, surfboard, and boots if required. This ensures that you are properly equipped for a safe and comfortable lesson.
You just need to bring swimwear to wear under your wetsuit and a towel for afterwards. Lockers are available for personal items, and it’s recommended to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated during the session.
Groups are kept small with a maximum instructor-to-student ratio of 1:8. This allows the instructor to give personalised attention to each participant and ensure everyone is receiving the correct guidance.
A small group also means more water time for each participant, quicker feedback, and an opportunity to practise techniques repeatedly, which helps build confidence and accelerate learning.
The lesson covers key beginner skills including surf safety, reading the beach and waves, paddling, positioning on the board, catching waves, timing, and basic board control.
In-water coaching gives participants personalised feedback as they try techniques in real conditions. This hands-on approach allows learners to gradually develop confidence, balance, and the ability to stand up on the board.
Each lesson runs for two hours, providing enough time to learn essential skills without becoming fatigued. The session is long enough to include a warm-up, beach briefing, in-water practice, and a final review of progress.
The two-hour structure ensures you can fully focus on the learning process, receive feedback on your technique, and enjoy plenty of fun and time in the water.
