This six-day traverse links the Sirimon and Chogoria routes, creating one of the most varied and rewarding ways to experience Mount Kenya. The ascent through Sirimon offers dry, open terrain with wide valleys and high-altitude scenery, while the Chogoria descent introduces bamboo forests, tropical vegetation, waterfalls, and expansive views across the Gorges Valley.
With an additional acclimatisation night built into the itinerary, this version provides a more comfortable progression toward Point Lenana. It is well suited to trekkers seeking a deeper, more relaxed experience of the mountain without compromising on challenge or summit success.
Depart Nairobi around 09:00 and travel north across the Equator to reach Nanyuki in time for lunch. The afternoon is free to relax and take in the mountain views. Overnight accommodation in a Nanyuki hotel provides a comfortable base before entering the national park.
Following breakfast, transfer to the Sirimon Park Gate to begin the ascent. The hike to Old Moses takes approximately 5–6 hours and passes through tropical and bamboo forest before entering the heathland zone. Dinner and overnight are arranged at the campsite.
After breakfast, continue the ascent toward Shipton’s Camp, typically reached after 5–6 hours of trekking. The trail crosses Mackinder’s Valley and approaches the north faces of the major peaks, offering dramatic high-altitude scenery. Dinner and overnight at Shipton’s Camp.
Wake around 02:30 for a pre-dawn summit attempt, aiming to reach Point Lenana for sunrise. Clear weather often provides wide-reaching views across the region. After time at the summit, descend to Mintos Hut for rest and overnight. This stage includes both the main ascent and the transition toward the Chogoria side.
Descend gradually through the Chogoria region toward the park gate. This area features some of Mount Kenya’s most dramatic scenery, including the Gorges Valley, Lake Michaelson, Vivienne Falls, and high plateaus. Visible peaks include Ithanguni, Rotundu, and the flat-topped Kilingo Hill. Dinner and overnight at Chogoria Bandas.
After breakfast, continue down the forested trail toward Chogoria town. The walk takes around 3–4 hours and passes through bamboo and tropical forest with chances of spotting wildlife such as duiker, colobus monkeys, elephant, and white-tailed mongoose. From Chogoria town, transfer back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon.
The Sirimon–Chogoria traverse covers two of the most distinct sides of Mount Kenya. Sirimon’s drier western slopes provide open valleys and reliable trail conditions, while the Chogoria descent features waterfalls, tarns, lush vegetation, and sweeping views across the Gorges Valley.
Nanyuki acts as the main entry point for the climb, offering accommodation, acclimatisation opportunities, and access to supplies or rental equipment. The exit through Chogoria allows for a gradual descent back toward lower altitude before the drive to Nairobi.
Good fitness is required for this itinerary, as the trail includes multiple days of sustained trekking and a long summit day. Participants should be comfortable walking for extended periods while carrying a daypack.
Altitude acclimatisation plays a key role in overall comfort and performance. The additional night built into this six-day itinerary supports gradual adjustment, but individuals should still maintain hydration, steady pacing, and good nutrition throughout the climb.
Guides on the Sirimon–Chogoria traverse have extensive experience managing acclimatisation schedules and summit success rates for diverse groups. Their insight into weather patterns, pacing, and route transitions ensures that the summit attempt and descent are managed safely and efficiently.
With porters carrying essential equipment, meals prepared daily, and all transfers organised, trekkers can focus fully on the movement, scenery, and altitude progression. The six-day version offers more time to appreciate the unique landscapes of both sides of the mountain, making it a strong choice for those wanting a fuller experience.
The six-day itinerary includes an additional acclimatisation night, which makes the ascent more comfortable and improves overall performance at altitude. Camps are more evenly spaced, reducing daily fatigue before the summit attempt.
The longer schedule also provides more time to appreciate the landscapes on both sides of the mountain, particularly during the Chogoria descent where scenery is a major highlight.
The route is challenging and requires good fitness due to daily altitude gain and the early-morning summit attempt. However, the additional day makes the climb more manageable compared with faster itineraries.
Guides monitor acclimatisation closely, pacing the group to maintain safe ascent rates and minimise fatigue during long days.
Accommodation includes a hotel in Nanyuki before the climb, followed by huts or designated camps on the mountain. These mountain facilities prioritise practicality and shelter, offering simple sleeping arrangements in high-altitude environments.
Chogoria Bandas provides comfortable overnight accommodation during the final descent, with a gentler climate and lower elevation.
Sturdy boots, warm layers, waterproof clothing, gloves, a headlamp, trekking poles, and a reliable daypack are essential. Temperatures vary significantly between lower forest zones and the summit.
Personal medication, refillable water bottles, and high-energy snacks should also be brought. While some rental equipment may be available in Nanyuki, using your own properly fitted gear is recommended.
Summit day begins around 02:30 to reach Point Lenana for sunrise. The ascent is steady but requires careful pacing due to altitude and cold temperatures. Clear mornings provide strong visibility across the region, including distant peaks and valleys.
After reaching the summit, you descend toward Mintos Hut and continue on the Chogoria side, transitioning into greener, more varied terrain before reaching the Bandas.
Sirimon tends to be dry and predictable, while Chogoria has more moisture and dense vegetation. Night temperatures at Shipton’s Camp can fall below freezing, especially during clear periods.
The wet seasons—April to June and October to December—bring increased rainfall. Regardless of the time of year, warm layers and waterproofs should always be readily accessible.
Daily hiking times typically range from 4–6 hours, except summit day, which is significantly longer due to both the ascent and descent. Breaks for meals, hydration, and acclimatisation are planned throughout.
The final descent from Chogoria Bandas to the town is relaxed, with optional jeep transfers for part of the route.
Groups usually consist of two to seven participants, allowing guides to maintain safe pacing and personalised support. Smaller groups also reduce congestion on the trail and improve acclimatisation management.
A porter team carries the bulk of equipment, giving trekkers a lighter load and smoother progression.
Meals include energy-rich staples such as rice, pasta, vegetables, and warm drinks. These are prepared by mountain cooks and designed to meet the nutritional demands of high-altitude trekking.
Dietary restrictions can typically be accommodated with prior notice. Trekkers are encouraged to bring personal snacks for additional energy during long days.
