This 5-night hiking trip through the Scottish Highlands offers the opportunity to explore one of the last true wildernesses in Europe. The Knoydart Peninsula, known for its remoteness and unspoiled beauty, will be your backdrop as you venture off the beaten track, hike rugged terrain, and enjoy beautiful views across the landscape. You’ll spend your nights wild camping, experiencing the great outdoors while guided by experts, before finishing the adventure with a well-earned drink in the most remote pub in the UK.
The adventure begins with a ferry crossing from Mallaig to Inverie, a tiny village on the Knoydart Peninsula, where the group will gather before starting the trek. After disembarking, you’ll head out on foot, hiking through the village before setting off for five days of wilderness adventure. Each day you’ll cover between 10-16 km, navigating various terrains that include forest paths, rugged hills, and coastal trails. The route offers panoramic views over Scotland, including the impressive Cuilin mountains, as you trek through some of the most remote parts of the UK.
The team will set up camp in remote locations, ensuring you have the opportunity to rest and enjoy the wild surroundings each night. With a focus on immersion in nature, the trip takes you through woodlands, beaches, and across munros, with some tough climbs along the way. You’ll be part of a small group, ensuring a more personal experience and the chance to connect with like-minded adventurers. At the end of your trek, you’ll visit the most remote pub in the UK to toast your accomplishment and share stories from your days spent in the wild.
Throughout the journey, you’ll be guided by fully qualified experts who will ensure your safety while providing insight into the natural history and beauty of the area. Expedition-style meals will be provided, with the chance to enjoy meals around the campfire at the beach. As the group is small, your guide will be able to tailor the pace of the hike to suit the group’s needs and preferences, with some options to make the hike easier or more challenging as required.
Knoydart is located on the west coast of Scotland, in the heart of the Highlands, and is known for its isolation and wild beauty. It’s often referred to as one of the last truly remote areas in the UK, accessible only by boat or foot.
The trek begins in the village of Inverie, which can only be reached by ferry from Mallaig. The Knoydart Peninsula offers a mix of coastal views, mountain ridges, and lush forested areas, making it a true wilderness experience.
During the trip, you will spend most nights wild camping, setting up camp in scenic locations each night. Tents are provided, though you are welcome to bring your own if preferred. The wild camping experience allows you to fully immerse yourself in the outdoors while remaining comfortable.
For the first and last nights of the trip, you will stay in a local accommodation, which will provide a restful start and finish to your adventure. Given the remote nature of the tour, it’s possible that the itinerary may change based on weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances, adding an element of flexibility to your experience.
To take part in this adventure, you need to be in good physical condition and have previous hiking and camping experience. The hike will require you to carry your own gear and will involve walking 10-16 km each day, for up to 8 hours a day. You should be prepared for challenging terrain, including ascents and occasional boggy areas.
Previous experience hiking in rugged or mountainous terrain is essential to ensure you can handle the physical demands of the trip. While the hike is demanding, options for a more relaxed pace will be available if required.
