Spending a week kayaking through the Helsinki Archipelago offers a unique way to explore one of the largest island groups in the world. Travelling in a small group, you’ll paddle between 10-20km each day, weaving through a landscape of over 50,000 islands. Along the way, there will be opportunities to observe local wildlife, including sea eagles, ospreys, and seals, and to experience the distinct island culture of Finland. Evenings will be spent setting up camp, preparing meals over an open fire, and unwinding by the sea. A traditional Finnish sauna is often part of the experience, offering a chance to relax after a day on the water.
Over six days, you’ll navigate a diverse range of islands, from remote, untouched wilderness to inhabited islets with small fishing communities and summer cottages. Each day follows a steady pace, with plenty of time to take in the views, learn about the area’s rich history, and appreciate the beauty of travelling by water.
Mornings start with a hearty breakfast before setting off on the next stretch of the route. Some islands are covered in dense pine forests, while others are bare and rocky, shaped by centuries of wind and waves. The guide will select a route based on the group’s ability and the weather, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. There will be breaks onshore for lunch, with the chance to stretch your legs and explore on foot before continuing the journey.
Each evening, the group will set up camp on a different island, cooking meals over an open fire and relaxing by the water. On several nights, you’ll have the opportunity to experience a Finnish sauna, a central part of the country’s culture, before cooling off with a swim in the sea. The final two nights will be spent in a comfortable waterside hotel, allowing you to enjoy a warm bed and a good breakfast before heading home.
The Helsinki Archipelago is part of the vast Finnish Archipelago, a region of thousands of islands stretching along the southern coast of Finland. The route takes you through a mix of landscapes, from forested islets to open sea crossings, offering a constantly changing environment. Some islands remain uninhabited, while others have small communities that have lived off the sea for generations.
Wildlife is abundant, with frequent sightings of sea birds, and if you’re lucky, you may spot seals basking on the rocks or eagles soaring overhead. The history of the area is also deeply tied to the sea, with remnants of old fishing villages, military outposts, and traditional wooden homes dotted throughout the islands.
For five nights, you will be wild camping on different islands, sleeping in tents and cooking meals as a group. The campsites are carefully chosen for their scenic beauty and practicality, ensuring a comfortable experience in the wilderness. Evenings will be spent unwinding by the fire, taking in the night sky, and listening to the gentle sounds of the sea.
The final two nights will be in a waterside hotel, providing a well-earned rest after days on the water. The hotel offers comfortable twin or shared rooms, and breakfast is included, giving you a chance to enjoy fresh, locally sourced food before heading home.
