Three or five days on the same stretch of Watergate Bay gives the coach time to see how you actually surf, not just how you look on day one. Each day is a two-hour lesson at 10:00, 12:00 or 14:00, with the same kit and the same beach, so the work from Tuesday is still in your body on Thursday. First-timers and people who already paddle both take this course, from age 7.
Each day follows the same shape: check in, change, walk five minutes to the sand, then a brief and a yoga-inspired warm-up before about ninety minutes in the water. The coach watches what stuck from the day before and changes the drills, so you are not repeating a first-lesson script for a week.
Beginners stay on white water until the pop-up is reliable. If you already ride, the same days go on wave choice, stance and smaller boards. Leave the board on the sand at the end of each session and we carry it back up. The Hangout Cafe is on site if you want something warm before you drive home.
A wide sandy bay gives room for a course group without stacking on one peak. Watergate sits a short drive from Newquay centre, and the school is in Top Field Car Park above the beach, so you change at the top and walk down rather than kitting up in a wind.
Private parking for the school overlooks the water. Say you are with the course when you arrive and you get the customer rate. The 56 bus from Newquay drops you in Watergate if you would rather not drive the coast road each morning.
Beginners and people who already paddle both take this course. No prior surfing is required. Children from 7 can join the group days. Under 7s are better on a private lesson, which starts from age 5.
Come in swimwear, with a towel and flip-flops. You can bring your own board if you prefer. Get changed before you arrive if you want to skip the queue for the changing rooms on day one.
Soft-top boards are replaced each season, so a five-day course is not spent on a tired rental. Groups stay at six per coach, which is how a week of lessons stays useful on a bay that can get busy in summer.
Joel and Naomi set this up after years as lifeguards, and every coach on the water is a trained lifeguard as well as a surfer. Heated changing rooms and parking sit next to the school, so the week is about the water, not the logistics.
Meet at Top Field Car Park, Watergate Bay, Newquay, TR8 4AA. From Newquay, drive through Porth, then up the hill and turn left through the open gates before the dip into Watergate. From the bay, drive toward Newquay, pass the shipping containers, and turn right into the car park.
Please arrive 30 minutes before your start time each day. The 56 bus from Newquay is about 10 minutes if you are not driving.
Both use the same two-hour daily lesson on Watergate Bay. Three days is enough to get a first-timer standing and riding white water with some control. Five days gives time to move toward unbroken waves, turns, and paddling without a coach at your elbow.
Pick the length that matches how long you are in Newquay. The coach will not pad a three-day booking with filler, and a five-day booking is not the same script twice.
Start times are 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. We keep you on the same slot across the week where we can, so you are not guessing a new hour every morning.
Please arrive 30 minutes early each day. If one morning you need a different slot, ask the day before rather than turning up at a different time.

No. Plenty of people take the three-day course as their first time on a board. The coach starts with paddling and the pop-up, then moves you on when that is solid.

A soft-top board and a wetsuit each day. Boards are replaced each season. You can ride your own board if you prefer, and you leave school boards on the sand so we can carry them back up.
Heated changing rooms and toilets are on site. A lockable box at the water's edge holds keys, a phone and a bottle, at your own risk and with limited space.
Group course days start at 7. That is the same as the open lesson. For children aged 5 and 6, a private lesson is the better fit, because the coach can stay in shallower water.
If you have a mix of ages across a week, tell us when you book. We would rather put a family on a peak that works for the youngest than hope it sorts itself out on day one.
Light rain is usually fine. Wetsuits stay warm year round, and the changing rooms are heated. We cancel when the wind is too high, the swell is too strong, or fog sits on the bay, or if the beach is red-flagged.
If a day in the middle of your course cannot run, we rearrange that session or refund it. That only happens a couple of times a season, and we will be in touch as early as we can.
A towel, flip-flops, swimwear and a full water bottle. Changing into swimwear before you arrive keeps the rooms moving, especially on a 10:00 start in summer.
Sunscreen on a bright day. Leave spare bags in the car. The beach box is only for keys, a phone and a bottle, and it stays small on purpose.
We keep you with the same coach where we can, because the point of a course is that someone remembers what you did yesterday. On a busy week that is not always possible, and we will say so if a day has to move.
Whoever is with you that morning still gets a note on where you are in the week, so you are not treated as a first-timer on day four.
Private parking sits next to the school and looks over the bay. Tell the attendant you are with the surf course for the customer rate, and do that each morning rather than assuming they remember you.
It is one of the roomier school car parks in the area, but summer still fills. Leave Newquay with time to spare, especially for a 10:00 start.
