A coach works with you, or with your own group of up to six, for two hours on Watergate Bay. The plan follows what you want to practise, from a first stand through to cleaner turns, rather than a shared group script. Children from 5 can come on this booking, which is the better fit when a younger child needs more time in the shallows.
The session is built around what you asked for when you booked. After check-in and a change, you walk five minutes to the sand for a short land drill, then the coach stays with you in the water for the rest of the two hours. Feedback comes between sets, so you can try the same thing again while it is still in your head.
Larger family or stag groups can still book this as a private session. One coach covers up to six people. Beyond that we add another instructor so nobody is waiting on the sand. Leave the boards on the beach at the end and we take them back up.
Top Field Car Park sits above the bay, with the school, heated changing rooms and the Hangout Cafe in the same place. You kit up at the top and walk down, which is easier with a child than changing in a wind.
The beach is wide enough that a private group can work a quieter patch while the open lessons run elsewhere. Parking is on site. Say you are with the school for the customer rate.
Children from 5 are welcome on a private lesson, which is why families often choose this over the open group. No prior surfing is needed, and people who already paddle can use the same two hours to work on turns.
Bring swimwear, a towel and flip-flops. Your own board is fine if you would rather ride it. Get changed before you arrive if you want to skip the changing-room queue.
Groups stay at six per coach, and a private booking means that coach is only thinking about your people. Instructors are trained lifeguards as well as surfers, which matters when a five-year-old is in the white water.
Soft-top boards are replaced each season, the rooms are heated, and someone carries the kit back up the hill. You can focus on the two hours rather than logistics.
Meet at Top Field Car Park, Watergate Bay, TR8 4AA. From Newquay, drive through Porth, up the hill, and turn left through the gates before the dip into Watergate. From the bay, drive toward Newquay and turn right after the shipping containers.
Please arrive 30 minutes before your start time.
The coach is only with you, or with the people you booked. The plan follows your goals, and a child from 5 can come, which the open group does not allow.
If you are happy sharing a peak with other first-timers, the group lesson is the simpler booking. Private is for families, nervous first-timers, and anyone who wants the two hours to themselves.
One coach covers up to six people. That can be a family or a group of friends on the same booking. For more than six we add another instructor so the ratio stays the same.
Larger groups, including stag and hen bookings, can still run this way. Tell us the headcount when you book so we have the right number of coaches and suits.
Five. That is younger than the open group, because the coach can stay in shallower water and go at that child's pace.
An adult should be on the booking with a young child. If you have a mix of ages, say so, and we will put the family on a patch of beach that works for the youngest.
Top Field Car Park above Watergate Bay. Change at the school, then walk about five minutes to the sand. Arrive 30 minutes early.
From Newquay, come through Porth and turn left through the gates before the dip. From the bay, turn right after the shipping containers. Say you are with the school at the barrier.
A soft-top board and a wetsuit. You can ride your own board if you prefer. Leave school boards on the sand at the end and we carry them back up.
Heated changing rooms are on site. The beach box holds keys, a phone and a bottle, with limited space and at your own risk.
Say what you want to work on when you book: turns, wave choice, a smaller board, or a recap after a winter off. The two hours follow that, not a beginner script.
If you only want a first stand, that is fine too. The coach will not pad the session with drills you have already done.
Rain alone rarely stops a lesson. We cancel for strong wind, a heavy swell, fog, or a red flag, and then we rearrange or refund.
That is uncommon, a couple of times a season. We will be in touch as early as we can so you are not driving the coast road for nothing.
Swimwear, a towel, flip-flops and a water bottle. Changing into swimwear before you arrive keeps the rooms moving.
Sunscreen on a bright day. Leave spare bags in the car. The beach box is small on purpose.
Yes. Tell us the number of people and we will add coaches so nobody waits on the sand. The booking stays private to your group.
Start times are 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Ask early in summer, because those slots fill when the bay is busy.
Private parking sits next to the school and looks over the bay. Tell the attendant you are with the surf school for the customer rate.
It is one of the roomier school car parks in the area, but summer still fills. Leave Newquay with time to spare.
