Weekday mornings at 07:30 and evenings at 17:00 put you on Watergate Bay when the beach is quieter. Joel runs these two-hour slots Monday to Friday, with a yoga-inspired warm-up on the sand and about ninety minutes in the water. First-timers and people who already paddle both come, as long as you are 18 or over and you book with at least one other person.
Come half an hour early so kit is on before the 07:30 or 17:00 start. After a short check-in you walk five minutes to the sand. Joel talks through the day's hazards, then runs a yoga-inspired warm-up with bodyweight work and visualisation so you are not stiff when you paddle. The rest of the two hours is in the water.
These slots sit partly outside lifeguarded hours. Joel is a trained emergency medical technician as well as a coach, which is why the session can run at 07:30 and 17:00. After you leave the board on the sand, there is a short debrief before you walk back up and change.
The walk from the school to the water takes about five minutes, down from Top Field Car Park to a wide sandy bay. Early and late, that walk is quieter than the 10:00 rush, and you have more room to work a peak without a crowd.
Parking sits next to the school and looks over the bay. Say you are with the lesson at the barrier for the customer rate. The 56 bus from Newquay is about 10 minutes if you would rather not drive.
A reasonable level of fitness and comfort swimming in open water help more than a contest record. No surfing experience is required, but you do need to be 18 or over, and the booking needs at least two people.
Bring swimwear, a towel and flip-flops. Your own board is fine if you would rather ride it. Get changed into swimwear before you arrive if you want to skip the changing-room queue.
Joel runs these quieter weekday slots himself, after years as a lifeguard and a long stretch as a coach on this bay. Groups stay between two and six, so the feedback is aimed at the people in front of him, not a mixed 10:00 crowd.
Soft-top boards are replaced each season, the changing rooms are heated, and someone carries the kit back up the hill. You turn up with a towel. We handle the rest.
Meet at Top Field Car Park, Watergate Bay, Newquay, TR8 4AA. From Newquay, drive through Porth, then up the hill and turn left through the open gates before the dip into Watergate. From the bay, drive toward Newquay, pass the shipping containers, and turn right into the car park.
Please arrive 30 minutes before 07:30 or 17:00. These sessions run Monday to Friday only.
Weekday mornings start at 07:30 and weekday evenings at 17:00. Each booking is two hours, with a brief and a warm-up on the sand and about ninety minutes in the water.
Please arrive 30 minutes early so changing and the walk down do not eat into that water time. Saturday and Sunday are not on this listing. Look at the daytime lesson if you need a weekend slot.
The beach is quieter at 07:30 and 17:00, so you have more room on a peak and fewer people walking through your line. Joel runs these slots himself, which is a different feel from a mixed 10:00 group.
Part of the session sits outside lifeguarded hours. That is why the minimum age is 18, and why Joel's medical training is part of how the slot is run.
Adults aged 18 and over, booking with at least one other person. First-timers are welcome if you are happy swimming in open water and you have a reasonable level of fitness.
If you want a lesson for a child, or a solo booking, the daytime group or private listings are the better fit. This one is built for a small adult group on a quieter clock.
Top Field Car Park above Watergate Bay. Change at the school, then walk about five minutes to the sand. From Newquay, come through Porth and turn left through the gates before the dip.
From the bay, turn right after the shipping containers. Tell the attendant you are with the lesson for the customer rate. The 56 bus from Newquay is about 10 minutes.
A soft-top board and a wetsuit. You can ride your own board if you prefer. Leave school boards on the sand at the end and we carry them back up.
Heated changing rooms are on site. The beach box holds keys, a phone and a bottle, with limited space and at your own risk.
A towel, flip-flops, swimwear and a full water bottle. Changing into swimwear before you arrive keeps the rooms moving, which matters more at 07:30 when people want to get on the sand.
Sunscreen still helps on a bright evening. Leave spare bags in the car. The beach box is small on purpose.
Light rain is usually fine. Wetsuits stay warm year round, and the changing rooms are heated. The Hangout Cafe is there afterwards if you want a hot drink.
We cancel when the wind is too high, the swell is too strong, or fog sits on the bay, or if the beach is red-flagged. In those cases we rearrange or refund, and that only happens a couple of times a season.
First-timers do come on these slots. The group stays small, and Joel can stay with you in water you can stand in while you learn the pop-up.
If you would rather share a peak with other complete beginners at 10:00, book the daytime group lesson instead. This listing is for people who want the quieter clock as much as the coaching.
Between two and six on the booking. That is the whole group. Joel is not splitting his time across a larger open lesson at the same hour.
If you have more than six adults, we can look at adding a second coach. Ask when you book rather than turning up with extra people.
Give yourself more time than the map suggests. The coast road through Porth is quieter at that hour than at 10:00, but arriving 30 minutes early is still the point, not a suggestion.
If you miss the briefing we cannot rewind it for one person. Message us if you are stuck so we know whether to hold a suit.
