Winter mountaineering courses offer essential skills for those wanting to safely navigate mountain environments during the colder months. Whether you're looking to explore the UK’s hills in winter conditions or improve your existing knowledge, this course equips you with the tools you need to move confidently on snow and ice. With a focus on practical experience, it’s designed for individuals or groups looking to learn or refresh their winter skills.
The first day focuses on the basics of winter mountaineering, starting with an overview of essential gear and techniques. You will learn how to move efficiently on snow-covered ground, progressing to using the ice axe and boots in challenging terrain. By the afternoon, you’ll begin practising with crampons on various surfaces, learning the vital techniques for ascending and descending safely.
Day two builds on the skills from the previous day, focusing on the importance of snowpack analysis, weather conditions, and how they affect your movements in the mountains. You’ll also learn basic rope work for steeper terrain, as well as emergency procedures, including shelter-building techniques that could prove life-saving.
The final day is about consolidating your skills. You’ll head out for a full day’s journey, aiming to summit one or more peaks while revisiting key techniques. The instructor will provide feedback throughout the day, ensuring you feel confident and ready to tackle similar conditions independently in the future.
Courses are held in various mountain ranges across the UK, with locations selected based on their suitability for winter training.
Whether you’re in the Scottish Highlands, Lake District, or Snowdonia, the landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for practising winter mountaineering skills. These areas are chosen not only for their beauty but for their varied conditions, which replicate the challenging terrain you’ll encounter on winter hikes.
While no prior mountaineering experience is required, a good level of fitness is essential for this course.
If you’ve been training regularly or hiking in winter conditions before, you may be well-prepared. If you’re unsure about your fitness, get in touch for advice.
With over two decades of experience in guiding, the instructor has extensive knowledge of winter mountaineering and an exceptional safety record. As a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) and a Winter Mountain Leader, the instructor is dedicated to ensuring every participant gains confidence and skills that are transferable to their future winter adventures.
Courses are tailored to the needs of the group, with a focus on creating a supportive, informative environment. With a maximum ratio of one instructor to five clients, you’ll receive plenty of attention and feedback. The instructor is also part of the Patagonia and Black Diamond pro schemes and works closely with local brands, ensuring high-quality equipment and expertise.
No previous experience is required, as this course is designed to teach you the essential skills from scratch.
However, having a basic understanding of hillwalking or summer hiking can be helpful. The course content is adaptable to ensure that both beginners and those with some experience benefit equally.
You’ll need winter-appropriate clothing, a sturdy backpack, and personal essentials like a water bottle and snacks.
Ice axes, crampons, and compatible winter boots can be hired through us. A full kit list will be sent to you upon booking to ensure you have everything you need.
Courses are run in the Scottish Highlands, Lake District, and Snowdonia, depending on conditions and participant preferences.
Each location offers varied terrain and reliable snow conditions for practising winter mountaineering skills.
Specific meeting points and locations will be confirmed closer to the course date.
Accommodation and meals are not included but can be arranged upon request. We’re happy to recommend local accommodation options that suit different budgets and are conveniently located near the course area.
Participants should also bring their own packed lunches for each day.
You’re welcome to join as an individual or as part of a group. Solo participants often find the small group environment supportive and enjoyable.
If you’re booking for a private group, we can tailor the course specifically to your needs.

Our time outdoor climbing with Paul was great! It was our first time trad climbing and also doing a multi-pitch climb.
