Over three days you leave Marrakech for the High Atlas ski approaches above Imlil, climbing toward a Toubkal-area refuge with mule support for shared loads. Day two is an acclimatisation ski tour on nearby slopes, refining skins technique, avalanche awareness, and altitude comfort before the summit push.
Day three aims for a Toubkal summit ski descent when conditions allow, then a return to Imlil and Marrakech. Route choice, timing, and whether the summit line is viable rest with the guide based on snow stability, weather, and group energy.
Guides are certified for ski and mountain work in these ranges and plan each day around real avalanche and weather information rather than a rigid brochure itinerary. Mule logistics and refuge bookings are arranged so you can focus on touring and the descent.
Groups stay small enough for attentive leadership on steep and exposed snow. Briefings cover the plan for the day, gear checks, and decision points so everyone understands when the team will turn around or change line.
Pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad is followed by the road transfer into the High Atlas and the ski approach toward the Toubkal refuge. Meet your certified ski guide, check touring kit and avalanche safety equipment, then begin the climb on skins or foot depending on snow line.
Mules move shared logistics while you tour with a day pack. By afternoon you settle into the refuge, eat a hot meal, and brief for the acclimatisation day ahead.
An acclimatisation ski day explores nearby slopes and couloirs suited to current snow conditions. Expect a mix of skinning, short descents, and coaching on efficient uphill technique at altitude.
The guide uses the day to assess snowpack and group pace, then returns to the refuge for an early night. Summit timing and the planned descent line are confirmed after the evening weather and avalanche update.
An early start targets the Toubkal summit when conditions and fitness allow. Skin and bootpack as needed, then ski the chosen descent line under guide leadership before returning toward the refuge and Imlil.
Transfer back to Marrakech typically follows in the afternoon. If summit conditions are unsafe, the guide may run a high-quality alternative tour and still complete a full mountain day.
You will be picked up from your accommodation in Marrakech. Many riads do not have direct car access, so the driver parks nearby and meets you at a convenient point. Same-day pickup from Marrakech Menara Airport can be arranged when your arrival coincides with the tour start.
At the end of the activity you are dropped at the nearest accessible point to your hotel or riad. If needed, the driver can coordinate with your accommodation so someone is ready to meet you.
Essential ski kit: Touring skis with skins, ski touring boots, poles, helmet, avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe, and a day pack. Warm layered clothing, waterproof shell, gloves, goggles, and sunglasses for high UV on snow.
Also bring: A warm sleeping bag for the refuge, head torch, personal first-aid items, and proof of mountain rescue insurance. Confirm rental availability in advance if you are not travelling with your own touring setup.
You need solid ski touring experience, including skinning uphill, kick turns on steep slopes, and confident skiing on off-piste snow with a backpack. This is not a resort ski holiday or an introduction to ski touring.
Prior days in the backcountry, familiarity with avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe, and the fitness for long climbs at altitude are expected. If you are unsure whether your skills match, describe recent trips to the team before confirming.
The usual season is January to April, when snowpack on Toubkal and neighbouring slopes is most reliable for touring. Exact snow quality varies year to year and week to week.
Early or late season trips may involve mixed snow and rock near lower elevations. The guide chooses lines based on current conditions rather than forcing a fixed route when snow is thin or unstable.
Certified ski and mountain guides lead the group, manage route choice, and brief you on daily hazards. Mules help move shared logistics toward the refuge so you can focus on touring with a day pack.
Two nights at a mountain refuge, meals, and hot drinks on the mountain are included, along with transfers from Marrakech. Ski kit rental is not included and should be arranged separately if you are not travelling with your own touring setup.
You need touring skis with skins, ski touring boots, poles, and avalanche safety kit (transceiver, shovel, probe). Helmets and a day pack with spare layers are strongly recommended.
If you do not own touring equipment, rental can often be organised in Marrakech or Imlil with advance notice. Confirm sizes and bindings early so nothing delays your first mountain day.
Nights are spent in a high mountain refuge near the Toubkal approach, typically dormitory-style bunks with shared facilities. Blankets may be available, but a warm sleeping bag suited to winter mountain nights is advisable.
Meals and hot drinks are prepared for the group. Expect simple mountain lodging rather than hotel comfort, with early starts on summit and touring days.
Mountain and rescue insurance that covers ski touring and helicopter evacuation at High Atlas altitudes is required. Standard holiday policies often exclude off-piste skiing and mountaineering-style activities.
Carry proof of cover and emergency numbers with you. Without suitable insurance the team may refuse to start the expedition for safety and liability reasons.
Guides assess avalanche forecasts, wind, visibility, and snow stability each morning. If conditions are unsafe for the summit line, they may ski lower slopes, delay the attempt, or shorten the day.
Severe weather can mean an earlier return to Imlil or Marrakech. Alternative dates or routes are offered where practical rather than pushing into unsafe avalanche terrain.
Expect long climbs on skins followed by alpine descents on variable snow. Fitness for consecutive days at altitude, carrying a day pack, matters as much as ski technique.
Training with uphill skinning and stair or hill sessions before travel helps. The acclimatisation ski day is designed to settle into the altitude before the summit attempt.
Solo ski tourers can join when dates and group size allow. Private departures for two or more experienced friends are also common.
Pricing follows the per-person tiers shown on the listing. Mention preferred dates early in peak season when refuge space and guide availability fill quickly.
Tips for guides and mule handlers are customary but not included. Amounts are personal and usually pooled at the end of the trip.
Ask the lead guide discreetly if you are unsure about local etiquette. Plan cash separately from your kit and insurance budget.
