Paddle Start Award is where most people first put a paddle in the water properly. You might try a kayak, open canoe, SUP, bell boat or raft depending on what the centre runs. Nobody expects you to know a sweep stroke from a draw on arrival.
Most sessions last around ninety minutes to two hours on sheltered water. Your coach shows you how to get on and off the craft, what to wear, and how to move forward, backward and turn without wobbling off the board or spinning in circles. You will get wet. That is normal, not a failure.
Start is a participation award, not an exam. You leave with basic paddling skills, capsize awareness and a digital certificate registered through your Paddle UK Delivery Centre. If you catch the bug, the natural next step is Paddle Discover Award, where you start making your own decisions on the water.
Centres on adventuro run Start on lakes, canals and sheltered coastal venues. Compare craft type and group size before you book. A patient coach on flat water beats a rushed session on the wrong boat.
Paddle Start is a participation award with no formal pass or fail. Your coach signs off when you have covered the session outcomes on sheltered water.

Trouver des activitésIt is Paddle UK's entry award for newcomers to paddlesport. You get a structured introduction on sheltered water in kayak, canoe, SUP, bell boat or raft depending on the centre.
Think of it as your first proper lesson rather than a random hire session. You leave with basic strokes, safety awareness and a digital certificate.
None. Complete beginners are the main audience. You should be comfortable in and around water, but you do not need any prior paddling experience.
Leave a comment when you book if you are arranging a session for a child or if anyone in your group has never been on the water before.
Typically ninety minutes to two hours on sheltered water. Most centres run Start as a single taster rather than a multi-day course.
If you want more time afloat after Start, book Paddle Discover Award or a second taster in another craft.
No. Paddle Start is a participation award. Your coach covers the session outcomes and registers your certificate when you are done.
There is no written exam and no pass-or-fail pressure. The goal is to enjoy your first structured paddle safely.
Yes, if you are water confident. Nerves before your first session are completely normal. Instructors introduce skills in shallow water and never push you beyond what you agree to try.
Leave a comment when you book if you want a slower pace, a quiet introduction, or help choosing between kayak, canoe and SUP. Many centres are used to nervous beginners.
Clothes you are happy to get wet, non-slip footwear, a towel and a change of clothes. Most centres provide craft, paddle and buoyancy aid.
Check your booking page for wetsuit hire. Sun cream or warm layers depending on the venue. Avoid flip-flops on slippery banks.
Many centres let you choose a craft when you book. Some taster sessions offer more than one boat type if time allows.
Starting in the craft you plan to pursue saves time later. You can always change discipline, but a clear first choice helps your coach plan the session.
The natural next step is Paddle Discover Award, where you build decision making and practical skills for safer, more independent paddling.
You can also book further taster sessions in another craft, join supervised club paddles, or simply hire kit with more confidence.
Paddle Start is open to all ages. Individual centres may set their own minimum, often around eight years old for children.
Leave a comment when you book for a child so the centre can confirm age policy, craft allocation and parental consent requirements.
Yes. Your Delivery Centre registers Paddle Start digitally with Paddle UK when you complete the session. Registration is free for this entry award.
Keep your membership details current if you plan to collect further Paddle UK awards on the same profile.
adventuro lists Paddle UK Delivery Centres running Start sessions on lakes, canals, rivers and coastal sheltered venues across the UK.
