What is the ISA?
The International Surfing Association (ISA) sets global standards for surf and stand-up paddleboard (SUP) coaching and instruction. ISA qualifications are used by surf schools and watersports centres worldwide, with a clear ladder from assistant coach through to advanced open-water instruction.
Courses combine water skills, teaching practice, safety and rescue, and theory on oceanography and session planning. ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor is the usual entry point for teaching beginners in the surf zone; open-water SUP awards extend leadership to coastal and exposed paddling environments.

Choosing a course
Surf instructor courses expect confident surfing and strong swimming; SUP instructor awards expect solid paddling in the environment you will teach. Check minimum ages, first aid requirements and whether the centre runs surf or flat-water modules before you book.
ISA cards are international, but employers and beaches may ask for additional local qualifications such as lifeguard awards. Leave a comment when you book if you need the course for a specific job or country, and the centre will confirm what is included.
Official standards
ISA course standards and coach education pathways are published at isasurf.org. adventuro shows where you can book; your training centre confirms prerequisites, assessment and card registration when you book.
