Overview

South West England offers a varied and underrated canoeing landscape. The rivers Dart, Exe, Tamar and Avon each have their character: the Dart drops through Dartmoor's granite moorland before widening into a tidal estuary; the Exe winds through the Somerset Levels; the Avon navigates Bath and Bristol's urban waterway network. Coastal estuaries like Salcombe, Fowey and the Helford provide sheltered tidal paddling with access to creeks and anchorages that are invisible from the road. For flat water, Wimbleball, Roadford and Wimbledon on Dartmoor offer open reservoir paddling away from tidal influence.
