Pico do Fogo is Cape Verde's highest summit at 2829 metres, and this 7-hour day climbs it from Chã das Caldeiras. Hotel pickup on Fogo and the transfer into Fogo Natural Park sit around the ascent. Good conditions matter for the volcanic climb and the ash descent.
Fogo hotel collection comes first, then the transfer into Fogo Natural Park, where the greeting is in Chã das Caldeiras at 1730 metres. Fig, vine, apple, and pear trees line the crater floor while your guide talks through the local geology and the eruption that left the settlement under lava. The path then steepens toward the summit over 3 to 4 hours, with the pace set to the group on volcanic ground.
At 2829 metres the view is a full circle of Fogo, with other islands visible when the weather is clear, then you sit down to eat the picnic you packed. Hiking shoes, walking sticks, a hat, sunscreen, food and water are not supplied. The way down runs on lava ash toward Chã das Caldeiras before the transfer back to your accommodation. Eight is the most we take, which keeps the line manageable on the narrow summit path.
Chã das Caldeiras sits at about 1730 metres inside Fogo's crater, with orchards and houses set on old lava. Pico do Fogo rises from that floor to 2829 metres, the high point of the Cape Verde archipelago, and the recent eruption still shows as dark flows across the village.
Fogo Natural Park covers the volcano and the caldeira communities around it. Summit views look out over the island's cone and, sometimes, neighbouring islands across the Atlantic when the sky is open. The walk stays inside this crater-and-peak landscape rather than on the road towns below.
Volcanic ground asks for walking shoes that can handle ash, along with walking sticks, a hat, sunscreen, picnic, and water, because those items are not supplied on the day. You need to be at least 16 and fit enough for a challenging 3 to 4 hour climb, plus the ash descent afterward.
Previous mountaineering is not required, but you should be used to long uphill walking at altitude. The pace adjusts to the group. The height gain from 1730 metres to 2829 metres makes this a full mountain day, not a short valley stroll.
Guides who know Fogo Natural Park meet you in Chã das Caldeiras and set the climb to the group's pace, which matters on a 3 to 4 hour ascent of loose volcanic ground. Groups stay at a maximum of 8, which keeps the line manageable on the narrow summit path.
Hotel pickup and drop-off on Fogo are included, so you are not left arranging a separate transfer into the park. You still bring your own picnic and water, and you get time at 2829 metres before the ash run back toward the caldeira.
Expect a hard mountain day. You gain height from about 1730 metres in Chã das Caldeiras to the 2829-metre summit, and the uphill stretch alone usually takes 3 to 4 hours on volcanic ground.
Your guide sets the pace to the group, which helps on loose ash and steeper sections. You should still arrive used to long uphill walking, because the descent on lava ash is part of the same 7-hour day.
Sixteen is the youngest age we take on this 7-hour Fogo climb, because of the height gain and the challenging grade. Younger walkers are not booked on this hike.
If you are travelling with teenagers, check they are comfortable on steep volcanic paths for several hours. Adult places start from 16 upward on the booking calendar.
Fogo hotel collection comes first, then the transfer into Fogo Natural Park, where your guide meets you in Chã das Caldeiras at 1730 metres. The meeting town is Chã das Caldeiras, inside the crater, not the coastal towns lower down the island.
Share your hotel name when you book so the morning transfer can be timed for the 7-hour window. Pickup and drop-off sit around the climb, picnic, and ash descent.
Yes. The requirements ask you to bring a picnic and water, along with hiking shoes, walking sticks, a hat, and sunscreen. Those items are not supplied on the day.
The picnic stop comes after you reach the summit, so pack food you can carry for 3 to 4 hours of climbing. Carry enough water for the full 7-hour outing, including the ash descent back toward the caldeira.
The climb from Chã das Caldeiras to Pico do Fogo usually takes 3 to 4 hours, depending on the group and conditions underfoot. The full outing, including pickup, picnic, descent, and drop-off, is 7 hours.
Your guide can slow the line if the ash is loose or if someone needs a shorter step. The day still needs to fit the return transfer to your accommodation in Chã das Caldeiras, so early starts help.
Pico do Fogo is the highest point in Cape Verde at 2829 metres. From the summit you get a 360-degree view across the caldeira and the rest of Fogo, and other islands can show on the horizon when the weather is clear.
The recent eruption still marks the village below with lava, which your guide explains on the way up through the orchards. Cloud can sit on the rim, so the view is never guaranteed, which is why this climb needs good conditions.
Eight guests is the cap on this park-transfer climb, which keeps the line shorter on the narrow volcanic path and makes it easier for the guide to adjust the pace.
The booking can start from one person when a date is open. If you want a quieter summit day, the small group size is already built into this hike.
After the picnic you descend toward Chã das Caldeiras on lava ash, which some walkers take at a quicker run when the surface allows. It is part of the published route, not an optional extra.
Hiking shoes and walking sticks help on that surface. Listen to your guide for the line down, because ash can shift and the return still needs to meet the transfer back to your accommodation.
This climb needs good conditions. Wind, cloud, or unstable ash on Pico do Fogo can change whether the summit is safe, and we will contact you if the day cannot run as planned.
