It's a hard day rather than a technical one. You climb about 1,100 metres on steep, loose ground, so good fitness and sturdy boots matter more than experience with ropes. Coming down is fast and fun on the ash slopes, though it's tiring on the legs, and your guide will set a pace that suits the group.
The clearest conditions usually come from about November to June, when there's little rain and the summit is more often free of cloud. Showers and cloud are more likely on the upper slopes from about August to October. Nights in Chã das Caldeiras can drop below 10 degrees in winter, so pack a warm layer for the pre-dawn start.
Chã das Caldeiras puts you at the foot of the volcano, so you can walk out of your guesthouse in the dark and start climbing. It's quiet, cool at night and surrounded by vines and lava. São Filipe is better if you want restaurants, a beach and short transfers to the airport or ferry. Many people split their stay between the two.
Yes. The ferry from the port near São Filipe reaches Furna on Brava in about an hour, though it only sails when the sea allows. Plan at least two nights on Brava so you have time to walk down to Fajã d'Água. Keep a spare day before any onward flight, because a cancelled crossing can leave you on either island for an extra night.
