Throughout the day you move from a Praia hotel collection to Serra Malagueta, then downhill through Principal Valley with a local guide. Lunch and fruit juices wait at Mato Dento after the canyon path. The 6-hour window includes the eastern-road drive back to your hotel.
Collection in Praia comes first, then the transfer to the Serra Malagueta trailhead. The path drops through Principal Valley past hillside houses and fields of coconut, banana, tamarind, mango, and sugar cane. Commentary on plants and animals runs as you work down the canyon. The grade is moderate rather than a summit climb, which suits families who want a valley day.
Mato Dento is where the walking ends and the restaurant stop begins, with lunch and local fruit juices. After the meal the vehicle takes about an hour back to Praia along the eastern side of Santiago, so more of the island shows from the road once you leave the valley floor. Shared and private trek options appear on the live calendar.
Serra Malagueta is the high green start for this downhill, well north of Praia. The trail drops from that ridge into a canyon lined with houses and fruit trees, a different landscape from the dry south around the capital.
Mato Dento sits at the lower end of the walk, where the group sits down for lunch. The return follows the eastern side of the island, so the vehicle stretch is part of how you see Santiago after the valley floor.
Children from 6 years old can join when they are comfortable walking downhill for a few hours on rural paths. Decent hiking footwear is asked for, plus a hat, sunscreen, and water. From August to October, water shoes are also requested.
Previous trekking experience is not required. The grade is moderate, which suits a valley day with lunch at the end. Shared and private trek options appear on the live booking calendar.
Guides start at Serra Malagueta and know the plants, the hillside houses, and the pace that works on a downhill path. Shared and private trek dates both appear on the live calendar, so you can walk Principal Valley with a small group or keep the canyon to yourselves.
Ten is the most we take on a shared day. Lunch with fruit juices comes after the trail in Mato Dento, and hotel pickup and drop-off in Praia are part of the six hours.
Yes. After the walk you go to a local restaurant for lunch and local fruit juices. That stop sits at the Mato Dento end of the trail, so you eat once you are off the downhill path.
We do not publish a set menu here, because the kitchen follows what is available that day. If you have a dietary need, write to us when you book so we can pass it on before pickup in Praia.
The full day is 6 hours, which covers hotel pickup in Praia, the transfer to Serra Malagueta, the downhill walk, lunch, and about an hour driving back along the eastern side of Santiago.
The trail portion is a downhill valley walk rather than a summit climb. Exact walking time varies with the group and photo stops among the houses and fields.
Yes. The minimum age is 6, and there is a child booking option from 6 to 11 on the live calendar. Adults book from 16 upward on the shared or private trek rates.
The path is moderate and downhill, which suits families more than a mountain summit. Children still need decent footwear and should be used to a few hours on uneven rural ground.
Praia collection starts the valley day, with a transfer to Serra Malagueta and a drop-off after lunch on the eastern road. The meeting town is Praia, which is where the day begins and ends.
Share your hotel name when you book so the morning collection fits the 6-hour window. Pickup and the hour-long return sit around the downhill walk and the restaurant stop.
The downhill path passes small groups of traditional houses on the canyon sides, then agricultural fields of coconut palms, banana, tamarind, mango, and sugar cane. Your guide talks about the local plants and animals as you walk.
The trail finishes in Mato Dento, a settlement at the lower end of the valley. That is where you sit down for lunch and fruit juices before the drive back to Praia.
Water shoes are requested from August to October. Outside those months, decent hiking footwear, a hat, sunscreen, and water are the items listed in the requirements.
We do not supply those items. Pack them the night before pickup in Praia so you are ready at Serra Malagueta without a shop stop on the way.
The live calendar shows both a shared group trek and a private trek. The from price is the shared starting figure, and private dates price separately in the booking system.
Shared groups stay at a maximum of 10. If you want the valley to yourselves, choose the private rate when you book.
The trail is rated moderate. You walk downhill from Serra Malagueta into Principal Valley, which is easier than a summit day but still asks for steady footing on rural paths.
Families from age 6 join this outing. If someone in your group prefers a shorter step, say so at the trailhead so the guide can allow extra time before lunch.
Valley days on Santiago are only mildly affected by everyday cloud or light rain. A shower does not usually cancel the walk, though paths can be slipperier after wet weather.
If a storm makes the canyon unsafe, we will contact you about moving the booking. Keep an eye on the messages we send after you book.
Valley days from Praia carry a 100% cancellation fee if you cancel 2 days or less before the event. Cancel 6 days or less before and the fee is 50%. Cancel earlier, up to 1000 days before, and the fee is 0%.
The vehicle, guide and restaurant stop are already assigned. Tell us quickly if you need another Praia pickup morning so we can see what is still free.
