A seven-hour loop on Sao Nicolau links Faja valley with Covoada on cobbled paths and stretches of stream. A local guide stays with a group of one to four from the first valley steps to the return. Hotel pickup starts the morning.
Faja is a green valley where cobbled tracks and the stream set the tone for a long island day. The climb follows those cobbles, and at times the stream bed itself, to Assomada da Covada. From the top you look down on Covoada, then walk into the village to see how people live in this tucked-away valley before the route turns toward the coast. The grade is challenging, so the day is a real walk rather than a short village circuit.
Ribeira Funda comes next, a village of stone houses close to the sea that often feels almost deserted. Estancia Bras is the rest and picnic pause, and it is common to see washerwomen at work with clothes spread on the walls to dry. Leaving that pause, the remaining path closes the loop back in Faja. Pack food if you want to eat on the trail, because meals are not included.
Faja sits inland from Tarrafal on Sao Nicolau, a green valley with cobbled tracks and a stream you may follow for stretches of the climb. This loop stays on the island's quieter inland and coastal paths rather than a city circuit, so the day feels rural from the first steps.
Covoada lies in the valley below Assomada da Covada. Ribeira Funda is a stone village close to the sea that often feels almost empty. Estancia Bras is a natural pause on the return. The walk ends where it began in Faja, so you see the same valley from two directions.
Steep ground and a sustained climb to Assomada da Covada sit in the middle of a challenging seven-hour day, so guests need to be at least 16 and happy on cobbled paths and uneven stream sections. The return is still on foot, and the loop does not flatten out after the village visit.
No formal hiking qualification is required, and the group stays at four so the pace can stay sociable. Bring broken-in footwear and enough water for a warm island day, and tell us about any fitness concerns when you book so we can advise honestly.
Local crew know the valleys, the cobbled lines and the stories that sit in Covoada and Ribeira Funda, and a guide walks the loop with you rather than sending you out with a map. Hotel pickup is included, so you do not need to find a trailhead on an island where public transport can be thin.
Groups of one to four keep the day personal on a route that mixes village life with quiet coastal stone. There is time to rest at Estancia Bras and still finish back in Faja without rushing the last hour.
Walking this route is rated challenging, so you should be used to a full day on your feet with a real climb and uneven ground. The path uses cobbled tracks and sometimes the stream bed, and the day lasts about seven hours from start to finish.
You do not need a mountain qualification, but this is not a short village stroll. If you already hike regularly and can manage a long day in warm weather, you will be in the right range. Tell us about knees, heat or recent injuries when you book so we can be honest about whether the loop suits you.
Broken-in hiking shoes with grip matter more than anything else, because cobbles and wet stream sections can be slick. Pack a hat, sunscreen, a light wind layer and enough water for a seven-hour day on Sao Nicolau, plus any food you want for the rest at Estancia Bras.
A small daypack keeps your hands free on the climb to Assomada da Covada. Wear clothes you are happy to get dusty or damp, and bring personal medication if you need it. We do not provide picnic food, so plan snacks if you like to eat on the trail.
Hotel pickup from your accommodation on the island is included, which saves you hunting for a trailhead in Faja on your own. Share your hotel or stay details when you book so we can set a morning collection time that fits the seven-hour loop.
Drop-off after the walk is not part of this product, so confirm how you will get back to your stay once we return to Faja. If you are coming from another island, arrange those flights yourself, because inter-island travel to your hotel is not included.
Expect about seven hours for the full loop, including the climb, the village visit and the rest at Estancia Bras. That timing covers walking on cobbles, stream sections and the return to Faja rather than a short morning outing.
Pace depends on the group of one to four guests and on heat during the day. We build in a picnic-style pause where the route allows it, then finish where we started. If you need a firmer clock for a same-day flight, talk to us before you book, because this is a full island day.
Guests need to be at least 16 years old for this loop. The rating is challenging, the ground is uneven, and the day runs for about seven hours, so it is aimed at teenagers and adults who already walk well.
Younger children are not accepted on this product. If you are booking for a family with mixed ages, choose a gentler coastal walk on Sao Nicolau instead, or wait until everyone in the group meets the age and fitness level for Faja and Covoada.
Groups stay between one and four guests, so the day stays small even when other travellers join. That size helps on a narrow cobbled climb and makes it easier to pause for photos above Covoada without blocking the path.
Solo travellers are welcome, because the minimum group size is one. If you book as a pair or a family of four you will still have a dedicated local guide for the whole loop. We do not run this route as a large coach party.
This hike needs decent conditions, because stream sections and the climb to Assomada da Covada become harder in heavy rain or strong wind. We watch the forecast and will contact you if the day cannot run safely.
If we have to stop the walk for weather, we will explain the next step rather than sending you onto wet cobbles without a plan.
Meals, snacks and drinks are not included in the booking. Estancia Bras is a place where you can rest and have a picnic, but you should bring your own food if you want to eat on the trail.
Plan a proper breakfast before pickup and pack water plus something salty or sweet for the middle of the day. There may not be a shop at Ribeira Funda, so do not rely on buying lunch on the route. Tell us about allergies only so we can be aware, not because we are catering the picnic.
The trail starts in the Faja valley and ends at the same place after the loop through Covoada, Ribeira Funda and Estancia Bras. Hotel pickup is included, so you begin the walking day after we collect you rather than finding the first cobbles alone.
Faja is a green inland valley on Sao Nicolau, not a beach club start. The meeting area we use for planning is Tarrafal de Sao Nicolau, and we set the exact collection point from your hotel details. Keep your confirmation handy on the morning so the driver and guide can find you quickly.
Yes. The minimum group size is one, so a solo guest can reserve the loop without waiting for a full party. You will still have a local guide for the climb, the village visit and the return to Faja.
If other guests book the same departure you may share the day with up to three more walkers, because the maximum is four. That can be a pleasant way to meet people, and the group stays small enough that the pace does not become a march. Say if you prefer a private departure when you enquire.
Cancel 2 days or less before the Faja loop and the cancellation fee is 100%. Cancel 6 days or less before and it is 50%. Cancel up to 1000 days before the event and it is 0%.
Write to us as soon as plans change if you need another date on Sao Nicolau, so we can check a later loop from Faja.
