A climb steeped in history, this guided experience takes you to one of the first recorded climbs in the Lake District – Broad Stand. Sitting on Scafell, this challenging scramble combines fun, technical movement, and the security of a rope, making it an unforgettable ascent. While seemingly straightforward in the right conditions, Broad Stand has proven to be a serious test for many climbers, particularly in the wet. This is why we ensure a fully roped and guided approach to keep you safe throughout the climb. Along the way, you’ll navigate through Fat Man’s Chimney, a quirky highlight of the route, before tackling the ledges and trickier sections.
Your day begins with a briefing from your instructor, who will outline the plan, provide any necessary equipment, and discuss safety techniques. The route starts at the base of Scafell with a gradual build-up as you head towards the famous Fat Man’s Chimney. This section is wide enough for most but sets the tone for the day ahead. After squeezing through the chimney, the climb becomes more challenging, and this is where Broad Stand really earns its reputation. Your guide will offer tips, route options, and full rope security, ensuring you feel supported as you climb the steeper ledges.
Throughout the ascent, you’ll experience a mix of scrambling and technical climbing movement, especially in slippery or damp conditions. The day isn’t just about reaching the top – it’s about gaining confidence, enjoying the process, and learning the techniques to move safely on tricky terrain. Once you’ve completed Broad Stand, you’ll finish with a well-earned sense of achievement, having conquered one of Scafell’s most iconic scrambles.
Broad Stand is situated on Scafell, the second-highest mountain in England, located in the heart of the Lake District. This area is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, rugged fells, and classic climbing routes.
Access typically begins from the Wasdale valley, a beautiful and remote setting that provides a fitting backdrop for your adventure.
A good level of fitness and a head for heights are essential for this climb. While no prior climbing experience is required, confidence on steep and uneven ground is highly recommended.

Broad Stand has been the scene of many accidents, so it’s important not to underestimate this climb. If you’re considering tackling it solo, remember that weather and conditions can make it significantly harder.
A rope and guide aren’t just recommended – they’re essential for tackling Broad Stand safely.

Broad Stand is graded as "Difficult" and can feel much harder, particularly in wet or greasy conditions. It involves steep scrambling with some technical climbing movements, which can be challenging without a rope.
Our guides ensure you are roped and supported throughout, making it a safe and manageable climb for those with a good level of fitness and confidence on steep ground.
No prior climbing experience is required, but participants should have a good level of fitness and be comfortable with heights and uneven terrain.
Broad Stand involves scrambling and climbing sections, so being confident moving on steep ground will help you get the most from the day. Your guide will provide tips and support as needed to help you progress safely.
We provide all technical climbing equipment, including ropes, harnesses, and safety gear. You’ll need to bring suitable clothing for the conditions, sturdy walking boots with good grip, and a waterproof jacket.
A small backpack with food, water, and any personal items is also essential. If you’re unsure about kit, we can advise ahead of your climb.
The climb typically takes a full day, including the approach, briefing, ascent, and return. Start times can vary depending on weather conditions, but we’ll aim to finish before late afternoon.
If you have specific timing requirements, let us know, and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
Safety is our priority, and we constantly monitor the weather leading up to the climb. If conditions are unsafe, such as heavy rain or strong winds, we’ll either rearrange your booking for another date or suggest an alternative activity.
In damp conditions, Broad Stand can still be climbed with rope support, but it can feel more challenging.

Had the benefit of having Paul to myself for this Hike up Helvellyn on Sun 12/10/25 on a on to one. Paul was welcoming, and very personable / friendly. He provided plenty of advice from walking & breathing techniques & walking with poles. Paul showed a lot of patience with…
Our time outdoor climbing with Paul was great! It was our first time trad climbing and also doing a multi-pitch climb.
