A full day on sit-in sea kayaks starts with land work on launch, a forward stroke and how the boat edges, then moves onto the water for steering, rescues and time along a sheltered Torbay stretch. First-timers are the usual group. The instructor stays with you on the sand and beside the boats so the pace follows how people are actually moving.
Check in on the sand around 9am, get a boat that fits, and hear how the bay is working. Land coaching covers muscle use, leverage and glide before anyone launches. On the water the group practises those habits, then explores a scenic local stretch when conditions suit. Caves, rock hops and wildlife can sit in the same day if the venue allows.
Come a few minutes early so kit and the brief do not eat into water time. Pack lunch, snacks and plenty of water. The launch is confirmed when we approve your date, and we may move for tide or wind.
Oddicombe sits on Babbacombe Bay, a sheltered cove with Blue Flag water and an easy beach launch. South-westerly wind is blocked here, so a first sit-in day often stays kinder than more open Torbay beaches.
Other venues used on this course include Meadfoot, Paignton backwaters, Brixham and Berry Head, plus Dart and Teign access when the syllabus and forecast need that water. If Oddicombe is awkward we send the pin before you travel. Changing rooms and lockers are at the base when we operate from Oddicombe.
Twelve and up. No previous boat time is needed. Be happy getting wet and able to follow a safety brief on the sand. Under 18s need a parent or guardian in the conversation when you request a date.
The stable beginner solo boat holds up to 130 kg. Tell us if you are near or above that so we can confirm craft. Bring gym or walking layers to wear under dry kit, old or wet shoes, lunch and water.
Groups stay between two and six, which keeps the instructor close enough to give cues while you edge or practise a rescue. The day mixes land theory with time in a sit-in boat on real Torbay water, not a pool script.
Boats, paddles, buoyancy aids and technical layers are fitted before you launch. Coaches here work these coasts through the year, so the drills match the tide and wind you will actually meet.
We confirm the launch when we approve your date. That is often Oddicombe Beach, Beach Road, Torquay, TQ1 3DD. There is no parking on the sand. The cliff railway from Babbacombe Downs is the usual way down, or walk the path from the road above.
If we move the group to Meadfoot, Paignton, Brixham or another Torbay slip, the pin comes in the same message. Please arrive a few minutes before 9am so kit and the brief stay on schedule.
One full day, about eight hours from check-in on the sand through to packing kit away. Starts are usually around 9am.
Most of that window is coaching on land and on the water, with time to eat. We confirm the exact clock time when we approve your date, and we may shift slightly for tide.
No. The day is written for people who have never sat in a sit-in sea kayak. Land work comes first, then short spells on sheltered water before any longer look along the coast.
If you have paddled sit-on-tops or canoes, say so at the start. The same session can tighten those habits rather than treating you as a first-timer.
Twelve. Younger teenagers on solo touring kayaks are the usual group. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian in the conversation when you request a date.
Tell us ages so we put the right boats out. Mixed groups share the same instructor, just at a calmer pace if someone is new to a sit-in cockpit.
Often Oddicombe Beach, Beach Road, Torquay, TQ1 3DD. Walk down to the watersports desk beside the slipway. There is no parking on the sand.
Meadfoot, Paignton, Brixham, Berry Head, or Dart and Teign access may be used when that water suits the day. We send the pin before you travel.
A sit-in sea kayak, a paddle, a buoyancy aid and technical outer layers suited to the day. Everything is fitted on the sand before you launch.
Bring gym or walking clothes to wear underneath, plus lunch and water. Your own wetsuit is fine if you prefer it.
Lunch, snacks, drinking water, gym or walking layers, old or wet shoes, a towel and a spare top. Sun cream and a hat help when it is bright. A swimsuit if you want a swim.
Pack a bag for wet kit afterwards. Leave phones in the car unless you have a case you are happy to get wet.
Between two and six, so the instructor can still give cues while you edge or practise a rescue. Tell us your headcount when you request a date.
Larger parties can be looked at with an extra guide if you share numbers in advance. Extra people cannot just join on the day.
The stable beginner solo boat holds up to 130 kg. Tell us in your request if you are near or above that so we can confirm craft before the day.
We may suggest a different boat where that makes the day safer and more comfortable.
Rain alone does not stop the day. We move venue or shorten the water time if wind or swell makes the planned drills unsafe.
We contact you when the plan needs to change. Check your messages the evening before if you are travelling a long way.
Launching and landing, a forward stroke, body steering, edging, skeg use, capsize and rescue practice, and a simple look at coastal navigation and the day's forecast.
Rock hops, caves and wildlife can sit in the same day when the venue and conditions allow. The instructor stays with the group on the sand and on the water.

Absolutely brilliant experience, would highly recommend to everyone!
Kieran was an organised, pleasant, knowledgeable and interesting tour guide. Also clearly, a very good kayaka. The only critique would be the size of the group. It was just too long to get everyone geared up and at the cave for all kayaks to go into and out. Otherwise a…
Great, good local knowledge, friendly instructor. Lots of wildlife and little adventures had. Recommend.
Amazing experience, would highly recommend to anyone!
Jose was very friendly and helpful! The bikes he provided were great for the price, and we enjoyed a unique gravel bike adventure in Spain. There were very few other companies offering gravel bike rentals. I would 100% recommend this adventure with Jose to any travelers in Spain looking to…
It was really enjoyable. I had never done kayaking before but after some short, simple clear instruction I was confidently making it way along the coastline. It was great to see things from the water you would've otherwise have been able to get a view of. I would definitely do…
Excellent day out with super efficient Kieran and Sam. Even a novice like me finally cracked the code to a good kayaking. The caves, guided tour on geological formations punctuated by marshmallow roasting and fossil hunting truly enhanced the overall experience. Would love to do it again. Plus - a…
