At our centre, we offer Autism-friendly and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) climbing sessions that are tailored to support all abilities. We provide a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for children and young people to enjoy climbing, build confidence, and experience the physical benefits of the sport. With expert instructors on hand and a range of facilities designed to cater to different needs, we aim to make climbing accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Our Autism-friendly and SEND climbing sessions are specifically designed to cater to the needs of individuals with autism and other special educational needs and disabilities. Each session begins with a comprehensive safety briefing, ensuring that everyone feels confident and secure as they start their climb. Instructors are on hand to offer personalised support, helping each participant at their own pace while providing encouragement and guidance. We create a calm, friendly atmosphere by limiting the number of participants and reducing noise levels to avoid sensory overload.
During the session, climbers will have the opportunity to try bouldering, a form of climbing that is done on lower walls (not exceeding 4.5 metres in height) without the need for ropes or harnesses. Our facility is fully equipped with foam mats beneath the walls to ensure safety. In addition to the climbing, participants will have the chance to engage in a fun, physical activity that promotes balance, strength, and coordination, all while boosting their self-confidence.
Our centre is located in the heart of Torquay, making it easy to reach from the surrounding area. We are within walking distance of Torre Abbey Sands and close to the town centre, ensuring that visitors can easily access the venue.
The location is also well-connected by public transport, with major routes nearby, so it’s convenient for both locals and visitors alike.
There are no specific prerequisites for participating in the Autism-friendly and SEND climbing sessions, but we encourage parents or carers to stay with participants throughout the session.
The sessions are designed to be accessible for children and young people with a range of abilities, including those with physical disabilities. We also offer a specialised climbing hoist for climbers who may need extra support.
We prioritise creating a welcoming and supportive environment where all participants can enjoy climbing, regardless of their abilities. Our expert instructors are dedicated to ensuring that each person gets the assistance they need, helping them to progress at their own pace and feel confident in their abilities.
In addition to the tailored support provided during each session, our centre is fully equipped with specialised facilities, including a climbing hoist for individuals with physical disabilities. Our commitment to inclusivity means that everyone, no matter their background or experience level, is able to enjoy the physical and emotional benefits of climbing in a safe and encouraging environment.
