Amazing trip with 3x11 year olds. They loved it. Beat surfing apparently. Guides were amazing, kind, well informed and patient. We’ll be back for sure (take a GoPro if you want pics)

Private surf lessons give you a dedicated coach for 2.5 hours, tailored to your goals whether you are catching your first wave, bringing the family together, or refining green-wave technique with undivided attention. We run them from our Surfing England Centre of Excellence on Moor Lane with the same six-to-one standards as our public groups, but with your instructor focused on you or your party for the whole session.
Your surf lesson will take 2.5 hours, with a minimum of 1.5 hours of water time. You will change into your wetsuit, collect your surfboard, receive a safety briefing and focus points at the beach, then surf with personalised feedback throughout the session.
When your session ends, you drop your board off, get changed and enjoy a hot shower at the surf school. Private format means your instructor stays focused on you or your group for the whole lesson, so children, nervous first-timers, and improvers all get more waves and quicker corrections than in a busy public group.
We organise family surfing lessons for children aged five and over in a private group format, with a surf instructor dedicated to you. Your family surf instructor is also a qualified beach lifeguard, so younger surfers get the attention they need in the whitewater and early green waves.
It is a practical way to enjoy time together on Croyde Bay while learning a new skill. Surfing is not affected by wet weather, so it works well on a rainy day in North Devon when a beach picnic is less appealing.
Lessons run on Croyde Bay from our purpose-built academy on Moor Lane, with heated changing rooms and hot showers on site. Croyde's sandbank waves break reliably through much of the year, giving beginners whitewater to learn on and improvers green waves to progress on in the same bay.
Baggy Lodge is a short walk from the sand, with secure storage for your belongings while you surf and hundreds of wetsuits on site so fitting kids and adults in one family group is straightforward.
Complete beginners are welcome, as are experienced surfers working on specific skills. Everyone must swim at least 50 metres and feel comfortable in the sea with a wetsuit and board for support.
Message us in chat about ages, ability, and whether you want a one-to-one or private family or group session. We match board sizes and beach zones to the least experienced person in your group without holding back stronger surfers.
Coaching is led by Damon Beveridge and delivered by ISA-qualified beach-lifeguard instructors on Softech boards, with indoor changing, hot showers, and secure storage at Baggy Lodge.
Private lessons use the same safety culture and lesson structure as our public groups, with more time per person in the water and pacing set entirely around your goals for the session.
We have got you covered, literally. All equipment is included in your lesson: high-quality surfboards, wetsuits, and neoprene accessories tailored to the conditions throughout the year. In the warmer months, we provide Crocs for the walk down to the sand.
All you need to bring is swimwear to wear under your wetsuit, a towel for drying off and changing after your session, and a big smile. We will take care of the rest.
Private family sessions can include children from age five with a dedicated instructor. One-to-one and private group lessons for older children and adults are available at any surfing level we coach on the bay.
Tell us ages and experience in chat when you reserve so we match boards, beach zones, and pacing to the least experienced person in your group without holding back stronger surfers.
Not at all. Private lessons cater for complete beginners through to experienced surfers working on specific skills in the line-up.
Your instructor tailors the 2.5-hour session to your goals, whether that is your first whitewater wave or refining cutbacks and speed on green waves.
Everyone must swim at least 50 metres and feel comfortable in the sea with a wetsuit and board for support when you are learning.
If you have concerns about swimming, medical conditions, or additional needs, message us in chat when you reserve so we can advise honestly and plan a safe session.
All equipment is included: surfboard, wetsuit, boots, gloves, and hood when needed, plus indoor changing and hot showers at Baggy Lodge.
You get a dedicated coach for the full 2.5-hour session with at least 1.5 hours in the water and personalised feedback throughout, without sharing instructor time with a large public group.
Bring swimwear for under your wetsuit, a towel, and warm layers for afterwards. We provide Crocs in warmer months for the walk to the sand.
If you have your own suit or board you love, you may bring them, but our store has hundreds of sizes if you prefer to travel light to North Devon.
Lessons run for 2.5 hours with sign-in, kit issue, a beach brief, coached water time, then debrief and hot showers back at the centre.
Private format means your instructor stays with you or your group the whole time, so children and nervous first-timers get more waves and quicker corrections than in a busy public lesson.
Private groups typically run up to six people with one coach, which suits families, friends, or small celebrations who want the beach to themselves.
Larger parties can message us in chat about additional instructors so ratios stay safe and everyone still gets meaningful coaching time in the water.
Yes. Family private lessons are popular for mixed ages from five upwards, with one instructor focused on your group only for the full session.
Your coach is also a qualified beach lifeguard, which helps when younger surfers need extra support in the whitewater or when parents want one shared experience together.
Yes. We are the only surf school in Croyde with hot showers on site, plus heated changing rooms and secure lockers for phones and keys.
Indoor facilities make private lessons more comfortable before and after your session, especially on colder Atlantic days when you want to warm up quickly.
Meet at Baggy Lodge, Moor Lane, Croyde, EX33 1PA, a short walk from Croyde Bay and the village.
Arrive a little early to sign in and get fitted with your wetsuit and board. Parking in Croyde can be busy in summer, so allow extra time on peak weekends and school holidays.

You will find us in the heart of Croyde Bay, steps from one of the UK's most reliable beach breaks. We run surf lessons, coasteering, weekend surf camps, instructor training, equipment hire, and sea sauna sessions from our purpose-built centre on Moor Lane, with heated changing rooms, hot showers, and secure lockers so you can focus on the session.
Our coaches work at a six-to-one ratio on group lessons, hold beach lifeguard and Surfing England qualifications, and coach everyone from first-time surfers to national pathway athletes. Whether you join us for a single lesson, a private session, or a multi-day camp, we keep safety, progression, and time in the water at the centre of every experience.
