A week-long residential designed for young sailors who have completed Stage 2 or equivalent experience. This Improver camp provides structured on-water sessions to develop RYA Stage 3 & 4 skills, including crewing larger boats, advanced manoeuvres, and a deeper understanding of sailing theory. Staying on-site for four nights allows participants to enjoy a full schedule of sailing, social activities, and shared experiences with peers.
The week begins with Stage 3 skills, focusing on boat handling, tacking, gybing, and sailing efficiently as part of a small crew. Exercises are designed to refine confidence on the water, reinforce teamwork, and develop a better understanding of how boats respond in different conditions.
Later sessions introduce Stage 4 concepts, including crewing larger boats, more advanced manoeuvres, and practical application of sailing theory. Children are encouraged to problem-solve in real-time and practise skills such as mark rounding, anchoring, and sail adjustment, preparing them for independent sailing and future progression.
Evenings are filled with engaging activities such as beach games, team challenges, movie nights, and BBQs. These social sessions complement sailing practice, helping young sailors develop independence, resilience, and lasting friendships over the course of the week.
Participants stay in en-suite bunk rooms at the on-site lodge, grouped by age and separated by sex. Comfortable bedding and secure supervision ensure a safe and supportive environment throughout the week.
Full-board catering is provided, with three freshly prepared meals per day. Special dietary requirements are accommodated if advised at the time of booking. Communal spaces and outdoor areas allow for socialising, relaxing, and participating in evening activities.
Based in Poole Harbour, the sheltered waters provide a safe environment for Improver sailors to practise boat handling and teamwork while still offering tidal conditions for real-world learning.
Onshore facilities include classrooms and briefing spaces for theory discussions, secure areas for recreation, and easy access to the water. Staying on-site removes travel constraints, allowing full engagement in both sailing and social programmes.
Participants should have completed RYA Stage 2 or hold equivalent sailing experience. They should be able to steer and handle sails confidently and work as part of a small crew.
Children must be comfortable in a residential setting and ready to participate in both sailing and social activities. Anyone unsure about suitability is encouraged to contact the centre before booking.
Qualified RYA instructors lead small groups, providing individual guidance and attention to help young sailors refine and consolidate their skills. Instruction focuses on confidence, understanding, and teamwork, rather than simply completing manoeuvres.
The residential format combines full-board accommodation, structured on-water sessions, and evening activities. Children gain independence, social skills, and a greater sense of achievement while making friends and enjoying life by the water.
This camp is aimed at children aged 8–16 who have completed Stage 2 or have equivalent sailing experience. It is suitable for those looking to refine skills, handle larger boats, and take the next step in their sailing progression.
Instructors adapt sessions to match skill levels, ensuring each child is challenged appropriately while still enjoying a safe and fun environment. Children gain confidence in their abilities while learning to work as part of a team on the water.
Stage 3 introduces boat handling, tacking, gybing, and sailing as part of a small crew. Emphasis is placed on practising manoeuvres repeatedly to build confidence and proficiency.
Stage 4 focuses on crewing larger boats, advanced sail trim, practical rigging, and applying sailing theory to real situations. By the end of the week, children have a deeper understanding of boat behaviour and teamwork.
Mornings begin with briefings and warm-up exercises onshore, followed by on-water sessions practising Stage 3 or 4 skills. Children rotate through practical exercises in pairs or small groups to develop competence.
Afternoons focus on applying skills in varied scenarios, including teamwork tasks, mark rounding, and problem-solving. Sessions end with reflection and feedback before shore-based activities or evening entertainment.
RYA-qualified instructors lead small groups, providing hands-on guidance during on-water sessions. Onshore, trained staff monitor accommodation, meals, and recreational activities to ensure safety.
Safety protocols are strictly observed, and equipment is checked daily. Children are supported at all times, allowing parents peace of mind and participants to focus on learning and having fun.
Children stay in en-suite bunk rooms, grouped by age and separated by sex. Staff supervision is continuous, and communal spaces provide room for socialising and evening activities.
The residential lodge is secure, comfortable, and designed to give children independence while keeping them safe. Children have easy access to both the water and indoor facilities for meals and briefings.
Full-board catering provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day, freshly prepared on-site. Dietary requirements can be accommodated when specified at booking.
Meals are balanced to support an active week of sailing, giving children energy for on-water sessions and evening activities. Shared mealtimes also foster friendships and social skills.
Instructors adjust sessions to suit wind, tide, and weather conditions. On less suitable days, exercises may focus on boat handling closer to shore, theory discussions, or teamwork games.
Flexibility ensures participants continue to develop skills safely. Adapted sessions provide challenge while maintaining enjoyment, regardless of the conditions.
Children should pack waterproof clothing, suitable footwear, sun protection, and a refillable water bottle. Personal wetsuits or gloves are optional but may improve comfort.
Buoyancy aids and some waterproof jackets and trousers are provided. Labelling personal items helps prevent mix-ups, and having the right kit ensures children enjoy all activities comfortably.
