Gain the confidence and competence to sail independently with the Adult RYA Level 3 course. Over two days, you’ll refine your boat handling, practise rigging and launching, and sail a triangular course under instructor supervision. Dinghies such as Wayfarers are used, and buoyancy aids are provided to ensure practical learning is safe and enjoyable, while waterproofs are available if conditions are wet.
The first day begins with a review of Level 2 skills, focusing on rigging and launching efficiently and practising boat handling techniques to prepare for advanced manoeuvres. Safety and capsize recovery procedures are revisited and refined so you feel confident in control of your dinghy.
Practical sessions then focus on sailing in any direction and completing a triangular course. Instructors provide personalised guidance on steering, sail trim, and tactical decision-making. By the end of the second day, you’ll consolidate your previous training and gain the confidence to sail independently, with practical experience in realistic conditions that challenge your skills safely.
Poole Harbour provides sheltered waters ideal for practising technical skills and tidal zones that allow you to develop confidence in a variety of conditions. Calm areas are perfect for fine-tuning manoeuvres, while tidal flows and wind variability give a realistic sailing experience.
The centre’s facilities ensure safe access to boats, buoyancy aids, and instructor support. You’ll benefit from a professional and welcoming environment that balances learning challenges with safety and enjoyment.
Completion of RYA Level 2 or equivalent sailing experience is required. You should be comfortable handling a dinghy in a variety of conditions and able to perform basic manoeuvres safely.
Wear clothing suitable for wet conditions. Buoyancy aids are provided, and waterproof jackets and trousers are available if needed. Closed-toe shoes are recommended.
The venue has been a hub for watersports for over 50 years, offering an environment where learners feel supported and challenged in equal measure. The combination of sheltered and tidal waters allows you to practise advanced sailing techniques in conditions that reflect real-world sailing, giving your skills practical value.
Experienced instructors guide each session with a balance of encouragement and technical advice, helping you push your abilities while ensuring safety remains a priority. The friendly and professional atmosphere encourages confidence, so you’ll leave the course not only competent but excited to sail independently.
This course is aimed at adult sailors who have completed RYA Level 2 or have equivalent experience. It’s designed to consolidate previous skills and introduce more complex sailing techniques in a safe and controlled environment.
You’ll gain practical experience in sailing in all directions, rigging, launching, capsize recovery, and navigating triangular courses, preparing you for independent sailing or further advanced training.
Unfortunately not. Participants should bring their own lunch and snacks.
Participants must be aged 16 or above. The course accommodates a wide range of abilities, allowing adults of varying fitness and experience levels to progress safely.
Instructors adjust the pace of the course to suit each learner, ensuring everyone receives personalised guidance while practising new skills.
Buoyancy aids and waterproofs are provided. You will, however, need plenty of old clothes – as sailing can be a damp sport! Bring shorts and tee shirts for warmer days and tracksuit bottoms and sweatshirts for colder days. A pair of old trainers or wetsuit shoes is also recommended. We can provide a more detailed kit list upon booking, too.
Buoyancy aids are supplied for all participants, and waterproof jackets and trousers are available to use if needed.
Safety procedures are reinforced throughout the course, with instructors ensuring all equipment is correctly fitted and used during practical exercises.
We guarantee to give you the training and do our very best to help you pass the training and assessments. Most of the certificates depend on you demonstrating your competence, so we can’t give you a firm guarantee that you will pass. However, if the worst comes to the worst, you’ll leave us with an action plan to complete.
The majority of both days is spent on-water practising advanced sailing manoeuvres, including sailing in all directions, triangular course navigation, and capsize recovery.
Brief theory sessions support practical learning, helping you understand techniques, safety considerations, and decision-making in real sailing scenarios.
