• Dive theory refresh: Physics, physiology, equipment and decompression theory to instructor-candidate depth. You need to explain concepts clearly to students, not just pass a quiz.
• Watermanship and stamina: Timed swims, tired-diver tows and equipment exchanges that prove you can handle a long day on a boat without becoming a liability yourself.
• Rescue skills at pro level: Revisit Rescue Diver scenarios until your responses are automatic. You will demo these for students later.
• Dive site mapping: Sketch a site, note hazards and depths, and brief divers as if they have never been there. Accuracy matters more than artistry.
• Supervision and risk management: Count heads, read conditions, manage groups and know when to call a dive. Leadership is mostly prevention.
• Assisting on courses: Setup, debriefs, skill demos and student support during real Open Water and continuing education classes under instructor supervision.
• Professional conduct: Role-modelling kit prep, buoyancy and attitude. Students copy what they see, not what you say.

• Supervise certified divers on guided dives and certain training activities within PADI standards, as a qualified PADI Divemaster.
• Assist PADI Instructors with confined and open water training, handling logistics while the instructor focuses on teaching.
• Lead underwater tours for certified divers where local standards and insurance allow.
• Meet the core prerequisite for the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor pathway after you gain the required experience.
• Work or volunteer at dive centres worldwide, though employment rules and pay vary by country and shop.

• Prior certificates: PADI Rescue Diver (or equivalent from another agency). Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care, or equivalent CPR and first aid, completed within the past 24 months.
• Logged dives: Minimum 40 dives to enrol. You need 60 logged dives before your instructor can certify you. Centres often expect more if you are joining a competitive internship.
• Age: 18 years or older for full Divemaster. PADI also runs a Junior Divemaster programme from age 15 with supervision limits until upgrade.
• Health: Medical clearance signed by a physician within the past 12 months. Divemaster work is physical: hauling kit, long surface swims and tired-student scenarios.
