The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a two-day practical course aiming to give you the experience and confidence to handle a powerboat in familiar waters during the day. The Level 2 certificate also lets you obtain the ICC, which is often needed if you want to drive or hire a powerboat abroad and as an entry requirement to many boating jobs in the UK. Seawake runs this on a ratio of 3 students to 1 instructor.
Day 1 starts at 9:00 with tea or coffee and a plan for the two days, then you get kitted up and walk down to the boats. From 9:30 you're looking at launching and recovering from a trailer, pre-launch checks of fenders, anchor, flares, fire extinguisher and spare fuel, and the first handling drills. After lunch you work through charts, compass, passage planning, buoyage, tides, tidal streams and basic VHF, then go back on the water for steer then gear, trim, high and low speed handling, coming alongside and picking up a buoy.
Day 2 starts with a review of what you learned, then a morning practical session. Lunch includes building a passage plan you will actually follow. From 14:00 you run that plan on the water, including the Swellies when conditions allow, plus emergency stop, man overboard, towing and how different boats handle. We review the two days at 17:00 and issue your RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate when you have shown the handling and theory needed for familiar waters by day. If you already have powerboating experience, a one-day direct assessment is available, with coaching in the morning and an assessment in the afternoon.
Our training centre is in Menai Bridge on the Isle of Anglesey, with a fully equipped classroom and access to the training boats within a five-minute walk. Menai Bridge offers generally sheltered waters, and the proximity to the Menai Strait makes for challenging but great learning.
They say if you can navigate the Menai Strait then it sets you in good stead for any navigational boating challenge. During the course you'll see the sights of the area, including the iconic bridges, and experience the infamous Swellies. The classroom is in the town itself, easily reached by taking junction 8A onto the A5 off the A55 at Britannia Bridge, with Pay and Display parking across the road.
You do not need any prior experience. Level 2 is open if you have no powerboating background, and it is also the usual next step after Level 1.
Come ready for two days of spray and wind. Wear warm layers, a waterproof coat and non-slip footwear, and bring lunch each day unless you plan to buy it locally. We supply lifejackets and buoyancy aids.
What makes a Seawake Powerboat Training course different is our team. We are all enthusiastic powerboaters with a vast amount of experience on the water, and our instructors teach using RYA guidelines, their own experience and their local knowledge of the Menai Strait and North Wales coast.
Theory is important, but we know that getting out on the water is the fun part for most. Classroom activities for Level 2 are done in our classroom close to where we moor the boats, so we can get maximum time on the water. Students tell us the relaxed but informative approach puts them at ease straight away.
Level 2 is a two-day practical course aiming to give you the experience and confidence to handle a powerboat in familiar waters during the day. Seawake runs this on a ratio of 3 students to 1 instructor, from Menai Bridge.
The Level 2 certificate also lets you obtain the ICC, which is often needed if you want to drive or hire a powerboat abroad and as an entry requirement to many boating jobs in the UK.
No. You do not need any prior experience. Level 2 is open if you have no powerboating background, and it is also the usual next step after Level 1 if you have already done that day.
The two days cover launching, handling, navigation and the drills you need for familiar waters by day. Starting at Level 2 is normal if you already know you want the fuller ticket.
Come ready for two days of spray and wind. Wear warm layers, a waterproof coat and non-slip footwear, and bring lunch each day unless you plan to buy it locally in Menai Bridge.
Lifejackets and buoyancy aids are supplied. A change of clothes and a notebook for the chartwork session are useful. You do not need to bring your own boat.
You train on Seawake RIBs, which are kept for this work and carry the safety kit you need. They are stable enough for the first handling drills and still give you a proper feel of wind, tide and the Swellies when the plan allows.
The boats sit a five-minute walk from the classroom, so launching, recovering and the shore-based chartwork sit in the same day rather than on two different sites.
Safety comes first. If the conditions are not right for two days of RIB work, the course is moved to other dates rather than pushing into water that is not suitable for the syllabus.
Menai Bridge is generally sheltered, so many days still run. You will hear as early as we can if the plan has to change, and the same two-day syllabus is used on the new dates.
Yes. On successful completion you receive the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate. That certificate also lets you obtain the ICC, which is often needed if you want to drive or hire a powerboat abroad.
The ICC is also used as an entry requirement to many boating jobs in the UK. The two-day course covers both the handling and the theory that application needs.
Seawake runs Level 2 on a ratio of 3 students to 1 instructor. That keeps the helm time high enough for launching, high and low speed handling, coming alongside and picking up a buoy.
A private one-to-one course is also available as a booking option if you want the two days without sharing the boat. The syllabus is the same either way.
The Level 2 certificate lets you apply for the ICC, which is often needed if you want to drive or hire a powerboat abroad. The ICC is the paper most European hire bases ask for.
You still apply for the ICC after the course. Level 2 is the training that makes that application possible, rather than a separate direct assessment.
Yes. If you already have powerboating experience, a one-day direct assessment is available, with coaching in the morning and an assessment in the afternoon. That route is for people who already helm to the standard, not for a first weekend on a RIB.
If you are unsure whether your experience is enough, the two-day course is the safer choice. It covers the theory as well as the handling, which is where a direct assessment often catches people out.
Yes. A private one-to-one Level 2 course is available as a booking option, so you have the instructor and the boat for the two days without sharing helm time.
The syllabus is the same launching, handling, navigation and ICC eligibility as the group course. Dates are set to demand, the same as the rest of the powerboat programme.

We had a fantastic time! The Skipper was brilliant and carefully tailored the experience to suit all the passengers needs. It was safe, exciting, interesting and a lot of fun. Thank you
The boattrip was amazing! We enjoyed every minute! Jason our captain told us a lot from the wildlife on Puffin Island. We really recommend this trip, it’s worth the money for sure.
Fantastic experience led by friendly, efficient and interesting people.
The instructor/guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable, and we had great fun on the boat
We loved our boat trip, water doughnuts and speeding along 50mph + was great fun. Our skipper was lovely, very knowledgeable and enthusiasm shone through. Want to come back and see the puffins next year... although this was my soul reason to book this trip it really did not disappoint…
The Rib Tour was amazing! Exhilarating ride on the rib combined with fascinating facts about the coastline and the birds on puffin island. Highly recommended, will be booking the bridges tour next.
Exhilarating but also really informative. A great experience all round and highly recommended
Brilliant! Loved when Jason put the RIB into ‘sports mode’. Perfect mix of adventure and information. Beautiful scenery, great morning in the water. Cheers guys.
What a great experience. Our skipper, Jason, was great. Good chat, very knowledgable and really pushed the boat. The boat is an impressive thing which really moves. Great experience! Will be back to do the other tour.
Excellent!
