Take your boating skills further with this two-day practical course in the Solent. Focused on confident boat handling, safety awareness, and navigation, it prepares you to operate independently and safely in a variety of conditions. On successful completion, you’ll also be eligible to apply for the ICC, allowing you to charter powerboats across Europe.
Your course begins with a briefing covering safety, equipment, and pre-start procedures. You’ll start practising low-speed handling and berthing, then move on to planing-speed manoeuvres, anchoring, and man overboard drills. Instruction is hands-on, allowing you to build confidence progressively.
Over two days, you’ll experience real tidal waters and active traffic in the Solent. The course covers close-quarters handling, springing, turning in confined spaces, and emergency scenarios. Supporting theory sessions provide essential knowledge on navigation, tides, charts, GPS, collision regulations, and weather.
The instruction is tailored to each participant, whether on a school boat or your own vessel. By the end of the course, you’ll be competent to operate independently and ready to apply for ICC certification, giving you the freedom to charter powerboats across Europe.
Courses run in the Solent, offering a mix of sheltered waters and tidal areas ideal for skill development. The environment provides practical experience in real-world boating conditions, while remaining controlled and safe.
The base at Hamble gives access to pontoons, marinas, and open water, ensuring a varied and realistic training environment. Whether on a school boat or your own vessel, the location supports safe progression from basic to advanced skills.
No previous qualifications are needed, although prior experience or Level 1 training can be helpful. The course guides beginners through to competent, independent operation.
Participants should be able to follow instructions and manage basic physical activity on the water. Age requirements are 12, or 8 if using your own boat, with younger students receiving endorsed certificates according to RYA guidance.
Rob leads all sessions with extensive real-world experience in sailing and powerboating, including global yacht operations. His approachable style ensures personalised guidance, helping each participant gain confidence and competence at their own pace.
The training blends structured theory with extensive hands-on practice. Students gain recognised certification and practical skills, leaving ready to operate independently on the water. Small group sizes and tailored instruction allow each participant to maximise learning and enjoy a supportive, confidence-building experience.
