You want to coach on the beach, and our Surfing England instructor pathway is your next step from Baggy Lodge in Croyde. Classroom modules, practical beach training and shadowing on live lessons build toward a final assessment with coaches who use the same safety culture as our daily public sessions.
This programme merges theoretical instruction with active beach training and on-beach mentorship on Croyde Bay. You study lesson planning, risk management, communication, and in-water teaching techniques, then apply them while experienced coaches watch your progress on real whitewater lessons.
The pathway concludes with an in-depth evaluation so you leave with the skills to lead beginner sessions safely. Around twenty hours of shadowing on live lessons shows you how a busy surf school runs before you take the lead yourself.
Classroom modules cover safeguarding awareness, equipment, and surf school operations, followed by practical beach training and shadowing working instructors on real lessons at whitewater level.
Final assessment tests your ability to lead beginner sessions safely in controlled conditions. Surfboards and wetsuits are available during training days; arrive with solid personal surfing ability and a willingness to learn from feedback.
Training is based at Baggy Lodge on Moor Lane, with classroom space, heated changing, hot showers, and lockers, and you walk straight onto Croyde Bay for practical modules rather than training from a van or temporary setup.
North Devon's busy summer beach gives you realistic instructing experience with tides, crowds, and Atlantic swell in the background. Croyde village has B and Bs, campsites, and self-catering options if you are travelling in for course blocks spread across several weeks.
You need solid surfing ability: paddling out, catching green waves, basic turns, and confidence in the line-up. You must hold or obtain a beach lifeguard or surf lifesaving award plus safeguarding training before certification is issued, per Surfing England requirements.

We are a Surfing England Centre of Excellence with programmes led by Damon Beveridge and coaches who train national pathway surfers.
You learn on the same beach where our public lessons run every day of the season, with shadowing that reflects real surf school operations.
After you pass the final assessment, you receive Surfing England Surf Instructor certification. It is the recognised entry-level coaching award for delivering beginner lessons in controlled, waist-deep conditions within a surf school safety framework.
Certification is issued once all practical and theoretical modules are complete and any required safeguarding and lifesaving prerequisites are in place.
You should paddle out beyond the whitewater, duck dive or turtle roll effectively, catch unbroken waves, and trim with basic turns on left and right-hand waves. If you are still mastering pop-ups in the whitewater, build your surfing with extra lessons before enrolling.
Coaches can advise on a readiness check session if you are unsure whether your surfing meets the course standard.
You can start instructor training before you hold a lifeguard qualification, but Surfing England requires a current beach lifeguard or surf lifesaving award before your instructor certificate is issued.
Many candidates complete lifeguard training in parallel with the instructor course. We can outline approved providers when you message us in chat.
