This program is continually evolving to incorporate various facets of professional development in the field of surfing. ISA Coaches and Instructors are required to comply with local laws and regulations where they operate. ISA Instructors need to be at least 16 years old to obtain accreditation but must work under the supervision of an ISA Instructor aged 18 or older. To instruct independently, an ISA Instructor must be at least 18 years old.
This level one course is the cutting industry standard for surf Instructors at quality surf schools around the world. This course has the broadest international appeal.
Participants will engage in detailed sessions covering the role of a surf coach, emergency action processes, lesson planning, communication skills, and coaching methods. The course also includes practical assessments, ensuring that all aspiring instructors are well-prepared for real-world teaching scenarios.
The course is hosted at Gupton Farm, Pembrokeshire: Marine Centre Of Excellence Saundersfoot, a prime location near Freshwater West, one of Wales's top beaches.

Leading our team is Dean, a seasoned waterman with a history of representing Great Britain in competitive surfing. He plays a pivotal role as a surf ambassador across the UK/Europe, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, aiding national bodies in forging a solid framework for the sport's growth. With a wealth of experience spanning 25 years in surf, SUP, and lifesaving training for all skill levels, Dean is equally proud of his collaboration with Disability Sport Wales, various community groups, schools, the National Trust, Pembrokeshire County Council, and international surfing organisations.

Yes we are. We have £10 million public liability insurance and all instructors & surf crew are fully qualified & members of the NGB.
There are no hidden costs, but please note that you'll need to maintain an up-to-date membership with the ISA, the international governing body for surfing.
The ISA Introduction to Surf Instructing E-Learning Course is now available on the ISA Source platform and can be completed at your convenience. As part of the updated requirements, all instructors must now complete this course before enrolling in the ISA Surf Level 1 Certification Pathway. The course fee is $50 after booking the ISA Level 1 with Outer Reef. For more details, please check our FAQs on E-Learning.
Our Pembrokeshire courses are held at our activity centre on Gupton Farm, Castlemartin, SA71 5HW.
Accommodation is not included in the cost of the course but we can recommend great value for money accommodation in the nearby area.
Food is not included, but there are local cafes nearby and a small supermarket about a 15-minute drive away. If you do need to heat up your food, we do have a microwave available onsite and don’t worry there is a kettle available for unlimited tea and coffee.
Yes! You must be able to show and understand the rules of priority, be able to negotiate the line up and show confidence in turning left and right. We also require you to be swim fit and a confident and competent swimmer.
ISA Level 1 requires 20 hours. You can arrange this with us if you wish. Once you have completed your assisting hours all information will be sent to the relevant governing body who will then process your certification
Yes, all ISA courses require an up to date lifesaving qualification too which can be completed before or after your course. If you are interested in doing your lifesaving course with us please let us know upon booking.
Introduction: (for anyone booking an ISA Level 1 Course)
The ISA Introduction to Surf Instructing E-Learning Course is designed to introduce surfers to the knowledge and skills needed to deliver safe, quality learn-to-surf lessons for beginners and early intermediate level surfers. The course can be completed online at any time and is the first step on the pathway to achieving an ISA Surf Level 1 Certification.
When you book and pay for the ISA Level 1 you'll be sent a message containing a discount code for 50% off the course and instructions on how to register. You'll be responsible for registering and paying the E-Learning fee directly to the ISA. This will begin your surf instructor education journey through the ISA’s globally recognised Coaching and Instructing Program.
Fee: $50 after discount code is applied
This course is the first step to becoming an ISA Certified Instructor. Participants who complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion upon finishing all eight modules. Finishing this course alone does not qualify the participant as an ISA Certified Instructor. After completing this course, participants must participate in an ISA Surf Level 1 Instructor Course with an ISA Course Presenter to become certified

Our booking was at midday for 2 hours, but we didn’t get the stuff until 12:15 when the lady came back with the surf school. We were then told to bring the stuff back before 2 pm or she wouldn’t be there (we needed to get our deposit back). This…
Got some surfboards and wetsuits for a couple of hours. They were dropped off at the right place right time, he was very helpful and knowledgeable, gave us a little info about the beach because we hadn't surfed there before. Will definitely be using again and recommending
