Learn to paddleboard on the calm River Thames at Streatley with BSUPA-qualified instructors. Choose a sociable Saturday group session, a focused one-to-one coaching slot, a BSUPA Level 1 Ready to Ride course, or a private group lesson tailored for friends, family or colleagues.
Arrive at the riverside meeting point where your instructor welcomes you and checks your waiver details, including buoyancy aid size and emergency contact. You are fitted with a board, paddle, leash and buoyancy aid suited to your height and experience, then given a clear safety briefing covering river etiquette, weather and how the session will run.
Beginners start kneeling to find balance before standing and practising forward strokes, turning and stopping on the calm water in front of The Swan. Improvers and private groups can focus on technique refinements, efficient paddling or simply enjoying a guided glide along the Thames. BSUPA Level 1 Ready to Ride follows the recognised syllabus so you leave with solid foundations and the confidence to paddle independently.
Sessions finish back at the launch area with kit recovery and personalised tips for your next paddle. Your instructor is on hand throughout with a maximum ratio of one instructor to six participants on group lessons, so you get attentive coaching in a relaxed riverside setting.
Sessions run from The Swan at Streatley in the Goring Gap, one of the prettiest reaches of the River Thames between Henley and Oxford. The wide, sheltered river here is ideal for learning, with gentle flow and scenic views across the Berkshire and Oxfordshire banks.
Streatley village sits right on the Thames Path, with riverside pubs and green spaces nearby if you want to make a day of it after your lesson. Parking and access are straightforward from the High Street, and the setting gives a calm introduction to paddleboarding away from busy harbour traffic.
No prior paddleboarding experience is needed for beginner and group sessions. You should be comfortable in the water, able to swim at least 25 metres, and happy to follow your instructor safety guidance on the river.
Children under 8 may join on a parent or carer board. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a full paying adult. Please disclose any medical conditions on the health waiver before you paddle so your instructor can advise on suitability.
Coaching is delivered by BSUPA-accredited instructors who tailor each session to your ability, whether you are stepping on a board for the first time or working toward the Ready to Ride qualification. Equipment is premium quality and included, so you can focus on enjoying the water.
From sociable Saturday paddles to private celebrations on the Thames, sessions are run with safety and fun at the centre of every booking. The riverside team knows this stretch of river intimately and will help you build real confidence, not just tick off a one-off experience.
If you are new to paddleboarding, the Saturday Group SUP or BSUPA Level 1 Ready to Ride course are great starting points. The Saturday session is a sociable hour on the water, while Ready to Ride is a structured two-hour qualification course with a maximum of four participants.
For faster progression or a special occasion, choose a 1:1 private coaching slot or a private group booking for two to six people. Your instructor will tailor the pace and content to your group on the day.
No. Beginner sessions assume no prior experience. Your instructor covers kit setup, kneeling and standing balance, basic strokes and how to fall safely before you head further along the river.
If you have paddled before, private coaching or a private group session lets you work on technique refinements rather than repeating absolute basics.
Your booking includes a premium paddleboard, paddle, leash and buoyancy aid, plus coaching from a BSUPA-qualified instructor and a full safety briefing on land and water.
Wetsuits are not included as standard but can often be arranged on request. Bring swimwear or quick-dry clothing, a towel and warm layers for afterwards.
Children aged 8 and over may paddle their own board when a buoyancy aid fits safely. Younger children may join on a parent or carer board. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a full paying adult throughout the session.
All participants must be able to swim 25 metres and be comfortable in the water wearing a buoyancy aid. Medical conditions should be declared on the health waiver before you paddle.
Scheduled Saturday group sessions run with a maximum of six participants per instructor. The BSUPA Level 1 Ready to Ride course is limited to four people so everyone gets thorough coaching through the syllabus.
Private group bookings are available for two up to six paddlers. For larger parties, contact the team to arrange additional instructors.
Wear clothing you are happy to get wet, such as swimwear, leggings or shorts, plus a hat and sun cream in warm weather. A towel and warm layers for after the session are recommended.
You do not need your own board or paddle. Secure footwear you can wear in the water is helpful for launching. Leave valuables ashore where possible.
River sessions depend on safe conditions. If wind, flow or thunderstorms make paddling unsafe, the team will contact you to reschedule or offer credit. Every effort is made to give at least 24 hours notice when possible.
Light rain alone rarely cancels a session. Your instructor makes the final call on the day based on conditions at Streatley and will always prioritise your safety.
Ready to Ride is a recognised BSUPA beginners qualification that covers safe launching, paddling technique, steering, stopping and self-rescue on calm water. It is a two-hour course with a maximum of four participants for thorough coaching.
By the end you should feel confident paddling independently in sheltered conditions. It is ideal if you want structured progression beyond a taster session.
Lessons launch from the riverside at The Swan at Streatley on the High Street. Your confirmation includes the meeting point and what time to arrive.
Arrive about 10 minutes early so your instructor can fit buoyancy aids and run through the safety briefing before you head onto the water.
Yes. Private group bookings from two to six people are ideal for birthdays, hen or stag paddles, and small team away days. The instructor adapts the session to your group, from gentle sightseeing to fun on-water challenges.
For groups larger than six, contact the team to arrange additional instructors and a bespoke time slot. All equipment is provided and no prior experience is required for a standard beginner session.
