This course is the perfect next step for those who have successfully completed the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course and want to further enhance their powerboating skills and qualifications. This two-day course is designed to elevate your competence to the standard required for completing short coastal passages by day and to provide you with an overview of the skills needed for the RYA Powerboat Advanced course. If you’re looking to expand your navigation skills, improve your understanding of boat handling, and prepare for more demanding conditions, this course is ideal for you.
Our course takes place at Menai Bridge, North Wales, an idyllic location offering sheltered waters ideal for training. The proximity to the Menai Strait provides a perfect balance of challenging and rewarding conditions, allowing you to practice your skills in a real-world environment. Our classroom is conveniently located just minutes from the pier at Menai Bridge, ensuring easy access to both shore-based and on-water sessions.
To enrol in the RYA Powerboat Intermediate Course, you must have completed the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course. It is also recommended that participants have a basic understanding of navigation, true and magnetic bearings, bearings and distance, chart symbols, tidal diamonds and streams, use of pilot books, position lines, and marina locks. While these skills will be revised during the course, having prior knowledge will enhance your learning experience. Additionally, holding a first aid and VHF/SRC operator's certificate and having knowledge equivalent to the Day Skipper theory is recommended.
We are dedicated to providing the highest quality of training in a supportive and engaging environment. Our RYA-qualified instructors bring a wealth of local knowledge and experience, ensuring that your learning is not only thorough but also tailored to the specific challenges of the Menai Strait.

The RYA Powerboat Intermediate Course is a two-day training programme designed for those who have already completed the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course and wish to advance their skills. It focuses on teaching you the knowledge and techniques needed to handle a powerboat for short coastal passages by day, covering both practical boat handling and advanced navigation.
Yes, the RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification is a prerequisite for the Intermediate course. The Level 2 course provides the foundational skills necessary for more advanced training, making it essential before progressing to the Intermediate level.
During the course, you’ll enhance your navigation skills, including understanding tidal streams, plotting a course to steer (CTS), using GPS for waypoint navigation, and interpreting weather forecasts. You’ll also practice practical boat handling in more demanding conditions, learn about pilotage for entering unfamiliar ports, and rehearse emergency procedures such as man overboard recovery.
The Intermediate course serves as a stepping stone towards the RYA Powerboat Advanced Course by providing an overview of the skills and knowledge required at the advanced level. It focuses on coastal navigation, passage planning, and handling a boat in more challenging conditions, which are essential components of the Advanced course.
The course typically runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM over two consecutive days. Each day begins with a morning briefing over tea or coffee, followed by practical on-water sessions and shore-based learning.
Please bring clothing suitable for a day on the water, including waterproofs, warm layers, and non-slip footwear. Also, bring your own lunch or plan to purchase it locally. We provide all necessary safety equipment, including lifejackets and buoyancy aids, as well as all course materials.
While the RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification is the only required prerequisite, it’s recommended that participants have a basic understanding of navigation, tidal streams, chart symbols, and other relevant topics. Having a first aid and VHF/SRC operator’s certificate, along with Day Skipper theory knowledge, will also be beneficial.
Yes, upon successfully completing the course, you will receive the RYA Powerboat Intermediate certificate. This certification is recognised worldwide and is an important step towards more advanced powerboating qualifications.
Safety is our top priority. If the weather conditions are unsuitable for safe training, we will reschedule your course for another date. We will contact you as early as possible to inform you of any changes due to weather.

The instructor/guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable, and we had great fun on the boat
We loved our boat trip, water doughnuts and speeding along 50mph + was great fun. Our skipper was lovely, very knowledgeable and enthusiasm shone through. Want to come back and see the puffins next year... although this was my soul reason to book this trip it really did not disappoint…
The Rib Tour was amazing! Exhilarating ride on the rib combined with fascinating facts about the coastline and the birds on puffin island. Highly recommended, will be booking the bridges tour next.
Exhilarating but also really informative. A great experience all round and highly recommended
Brilliant! Loved when Jason put the RIB into ‘sports mode’. Perfect mix of adventure and information. Beautiful scenery, great morning in the water. Cheers guys.
What a great experience. Our skipper, Jason, was great. Good chat, very knowledgable and really pushed the boat. The boat is an impressive thing which really moves. Great experience! Will be back to do the other tour.
Excellent!
Splendid trip!.....Captain was very knowledgeable.
We really enjoyed the boat trip to Puffin Island (2 August) - the people before us saw 2 puffins but even though we didn't it was still an exhilarating, (fast at times) and informative trip.
