Develop advanced navigation knowledge to confidently plan and manage long-distance ocean passages. This five-day course covers celestial navigation, passage planning, worldwide meteorology, and use of navigational instruments, preparing participants for the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean practical exam or enhancing long-distance offshore sailing skills.
The course begins with a focus on celestial navigation, teaching participants to take meridian altitudes and other celestial sights using a sextant. Exercises and calculations reinforce theoretical understanding and build confidence in navigation beyond land-based references.
As the programme continues, participants learn comprehensive ocean passage planning, including route plotting, estimating fuel and provisions, assessing tides and currents, and applying worldwide meteorological data. Scenario-based exercises simulate real ocean voyages, developing decision-making and risk assessment skills.
The final stage integrates all learned skills, with case studies and simulated passages to apply navigation, planning, and meteorology knowledge in practical scenarios. Instructors provide detailed feedback, ensuring participants are fully prepared for theoretical and practical offshore sailing challenges.
The course is held at our RYA-accredited training centre in Menai Bridge, Isle of Anglesey. This location provides access to tidal waters and coastal features that enrich learning through real-world examples of navigational hazards and tidal streams.
Our classrooms are modern and well-equipped, supporting intensive study while incorporating the local marine environment into lessons. Instructors use Menai Bridge and the surrounding North Wales coast to illustrate how advanced ocean navigation principles apply in practical contexts.
Participants must have completed the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory course or hold equivalent knowledge. This foundation allows full engagement with the advanced concepts of celestial navigation and ocean passage planning.
While no prior ocean sailing experience is required, a genuine interest in long-distance sailing and commitment to studying complex navigational and meteorological topics will enhance the learning experience.
We are an RYA-accredited powerboat school based in Menai Bridge, North Wales, with instructors who are highly experienced, passionate, and knowledgeable about local waters. Our team ensures courses are both informative and engaging.
Courses are taught using RYA guidelines, practical experience, and local insight into the Menai Strait and North Wales coast. Small group sizes provide personalised attention, allowing participants to fully develop the knowledge and confidence required for extended ocean voyages.
This course is aimed at sailors who have completed the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory course or possess equivalent knowledge. It is ideal for those preparing for the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean practical exam, or anyone wishing to gain the skills and confidence required for long-distance ocean sailing.
Participants benefit from a structured, intensive programme that builds their understanding of advanced navigation, celestial techniques, passage planning, and worldwide meteorology. It is suitable for both experienced offshore sailors and those transitioning from coastal sailing who want to develop a thorough understanding of ocean navigation principles.
No prior ocean sailing experience is required, as the course focuses on shore-based theoretical knowledge. The emphasis is on developing an understanding of celestial navigation, passage planning, meteorology, and risk assessment, rather than hands-on offshore sailing.
However, participants must have a solid grounding in basic navigation, such as that covered in the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory course. A keen interest in long-distance sailing and the willingness to study advanced navigational topics is essential for getting the most from the course.
The course covers advanced celestial navigation, including use of a sextant, meridian altitudes, intercept methods, and calculating positions at sea. It also focuses on ocean passage planning, taking into account tidal streams, currents, fuel and provisioning, and voyage risk assessment.
Meteorology is a key component, teaching participants how to interpret global weather patterns, synoptic charts, and forecast data to plan safe and efficient ocean passages. Other topics include the use of navigational instruments, long-distance passage management, and collision regulations applicable in offshore waters.
The course is delivered through classroom-based sessions, combining lectures, exercises, and scenario-based discussions. Case studies simulate realistic long-distance passages, requiring participants to apply skills in planning, navigation, and decision-making under varied conditions.
Online learning options may also be available through RYA Recognised Training Centres, allowing participants to study theory at their own pace while still benefiting from instructor support. Whether classroom-based or online, the course emphasises understanding rather than memorisation.
Yes, an assessment is conducted at the end of the course to evaluate understanding of celestial navigation, passage planning, and meteorology. Successful completion is required to obtain the RYA Ocean Yachtmaster Theory certificate.
The assessment includes both written and practical elements, requiring participants to demonstrate accurate plotting, tidal calculations, and risk evaluation. This ensures that candidates have the knowledge and skills needed for the Ocean Yachtmaster practical exam and safe long-distance offshore navigation.
Participants are provided with comprehensive course materials, including textbooks, charts, plotting sheets, and access to online resources. These are used for exercises and as reference material for future voyages.
Charts and navigational aids are supplied for all classroom and scenario exercises. Participants may choose to bring personal calculators or plotting tools, but all essential instruments and publications are included in the course package.
The minimum age to enrol is 17 years, reflecting the maturity required to study advanced navigation theory and manage complex offshore passage planning. Participants must also be capable of committing to focused study over several days.
The age requirement ensures that participants are ready to understand and apply navigational and meteorological principles, develop critical decision-making skills, and prepare for the responsibility of managing ocean passages safely.

The instructor/guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable, and we had great fun on the boat
We loved our boat trip, water doughnuts and speeding along 50mph + was great fun. Our skipper was lovely, very knowledgeable and enthusiasm shone through. Want to come back and see the puffins next year... although this was my soul reason to book this trip it really did not disappoint…
The Rib Tour was amazing! Exhilarating ride on the rib combined with fascinating facts about the coastline and the birds on puffin island. Highly recommended, will be booking the bridges tour next.
Exhilarating but also really informative. A great experience all round and highly recommended
Brilliant! Loved when Jason put the RIB into ‘sports mode’. Perfect mix of adventure and information. Beautiful scenery, great morning in the water. Cheers guys.
What a great experience. Our skipper, Jason, was great. Good chat, very knowledgable and really pushed the boat. The boat is an impressive thing which really moves. Great experience! Will be back to do the other tour.
Excellent!
Splendid trip!.....Captain was very knowledgeable.
We really enjoyed the boat trip to Puffin Island (2 August) - the people before us saw 2 puffins but even though we didn't it was still an exhilarating, (fast at times) and informative trip.
