Enjoy building your confidence as a skipper with this comprehensive shore-based course. It covers navigation, seamanship, and meteorology over five days, giving you the knowledge and skills to skipper a yacht safely in coastal waters. Ideal for beginners or those wanting to refresh before heading afloat.
The course starts with navigation, chartwork, and tidal planning. You’ll learn how to plot a course, calculate tides, and interpret weather forecasts to make informed decisions while skipper-ing a yacht. Practical exercises in pilotage and position fixing are completed using real charts to build confidence.
As the course progresses, participants cover collision regulations, passage planning, and basic seamanship. Interactive lessons and scenario-based exercises ensure a thorough understanding of safe navigation practices.
Classroom sessions are complemented by discussions of real-life examples and tips for handling common challenges encountered while skipper-ing a yacht. Instructors emphasise safe decision-making and situational awareness, helping you develop the skills needed to lead a small crew effectively.
Based in Menai Bridge, the course is ideally situated to give insight into the tidal waters of Anglesey. The area offers both sheltered and open water examples for theoretical exercises and practical understanding.
The centre has easy access to local harbours and coastlines, enabling instructors to illustrate course concepts with real-world examples. This environment enhances understanding of tides, navigation hazards, and coastal landmarks.
No previous sailing or navigation experience is required to attend. The course is designed for beginners, but those with some practical sailing experience will find the theory a valuable refresher.
Participants should be able to attend all sessions and complete exercises. A willingness to engage with navigation tasks and chartwork is essential.
The centre has extensive experience delivering RYA shore-based courses, with instructors who are knowledgeable about local waters. Their approach ensures each participant receives individual guidance to consolidate learning and build confidence.
With small group sizes, you’ll benefit from personalised attention, practical tips, and insights into safe, effective seamanship. The course combines structured learning with real-world examples from Anglesey’s waters, making theory engaging and relevant.

The instructor/guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable, and we had great fun on the boat
We loved our boat trip, water doughnuts and speeding along 50mph + was great fun. Our skipper was lovely, very knowledgeable and enthusiasm shone through. Want to come back and see the puffins next year... although this was my soul reason to book this trip it really did not disappoint…
The Rib Tour was amazing! Exhilarating ride on the rib combined with fascinating facts about the coastline and the birds on puffin island. Highly recommended, will be booking the bridges tour next.
Exhilarating but also really informative. A great experience all round and highly recommended
Brilliant! Loved when Jason put the RIB into ‘sports mode’. Perfect mix of adventure and information. Beautiful scenery, great morning in the water. Cheers guys.
What a great experience. Our skipper, Jason, was great. Good chat, very knowledgable and really pushed the boat. The boat is an impressive thing which really moves. Great experience! Will be back to do the other tour.
Excellent!
Splendid trip!.....Captain was very knowledgeable.
We really enjoyed the boat trip to Puffin Island (2 August) - the people before us saw 2 puffins but even though we didn't it was still an exhilarating, (fast at times) and informative trip.
