Nestled in the heart of the Lake District, Coniston is a fantastic location for rock climbing, offering a variety of routes for climbers of all levels. Whether you’re testing your skills on technical crags, enjoying short bouldering problems, or tackling iconic multi-pitch climbs, Coniston provides an incredible outdoor experience surrounded by natural scenery.
Your climbing session begins with a meet and greet, where you’ll get kitted out with all the essential gear and run through a safety briefing. Once ready, you’ll head to the crag, with locations carefully chosen to match your skill level and goals. The session focuses on building confidence and technique, whether you’re completely new to climbing or looking to improve. Over the 2-2.5 hours, you’ll take on climbs suited to your ability and enjoy the satisfaction of reaching the top.
Experienced instructors will provide guidance throughout, ensuring a fun and supportive environment. For those up for an added challenge, there’s the option to learn the basics of abseiling or technical rope work as part of the session. After an energising climb, you’ll pack up and return to the meeting point, ready to reflect on your progress and achievements.
Coniston sits within the Lake District National Park and is well-known for its dramatic landscape and climbing opportunities. The crags and quarries around Coniston, including Dow Crag and Hodge Close, offer climbs of varying difficulty, making it suitable for all abilities. The area combines breathtaking natural features with a rich climbing heritage, ensuring an unforgettable experience.
Sessions typically begin from a pre-arranged meeting point in Coniston, where you'll gear up and prepare for the climb. Coniston Water and the surrounding fells provide a stunning backdrop for your adventure.
No prior experience is required to take part, and all technical equipment will be provided.
Participants should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable walking over uneven terrain. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
With decades of experience in the mountains, your guide is a fully qualified Mountain Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader, ensuring safety, professionalism, and expert local knowledge. Passionate about sharing skills and inspiring confidence, sessions are tailored to your goals—whether it’s your first time climbing or you’re building on previous experience.
The aim is simple: to provide enjoyable, safe, and rewarding outdoor adventures while helping you gain skills that you can take forward into future climbs. Since going full-time in 2017, the focus has been on making outdoor activities accessible and fun for everyone, with a genuine love for the mountains at the heart of every session.
We recommend comfortable outdoor clothing, such as joggers or track suit bottoms, and a waterproof jacket in case of rain. If it’s cold, bring gloves to keep your hands warm between climbs.
For footwear, sturdy hiking boots or shoes with stiff soles are best. We’ll provide climbing shoes if necessary, but beginners often find boots more comfortable for the session.
No previous climbing experience is required for this session. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have some climbing experience, the session will be tailored to your level.
Our instructors will guide you through all the techniques, ensuring you feel confident and safe throughout.
Each session lasts around 2 to 2.5 hours. You’ll meet at the designated time, receive your equipment, and then head out to the crag where you’ll enjoy a hands-on climbing experience.
After the climb, we’ll return to the meeting point.
You’ll need your personal clothing, including warm layers and waterproofs, as well as any personal medication if applicable. We also recommend bringing food and drink for the session, especially if you're planning a morning climb.
We’ll provide all the necessary safety equipment, including harnesses, helmets, ropes, and climbing hardware.
Yes, children can participate, but they must be accompanied by an adult. We recommend that all participants have a reasonable level of fitness, as the terrain can be challenging.
Children under 16 will need to be supervised by a parent or guardian during the activity.
