Swap the traditional raft for your own inflatable river ducky and experience the River Tay from a completely different perspective. Combining elements of kayaking, canoeing and white water rafting, this guided adventure gives you greater control as you work together to navigate the rapids with an experienced instructor nearby.
Beginning at the activity centre in Aberfeldy, you'll meet your guides before being fitted with a wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet. After a detailed safety briefing and introduction to paddling techniques, you'll practise controlling your two-person inflatable ducky before setting off onto the River Tay. Your guide will accompany the group throughout the trip, offering advice on reading the river, steering through the rapids and working together as a team.
Once on the water, you'll paddle through a mixture of calmer stretches and exciting white water, using your own skills to guide the ducky around bends, over small waves and through faster flowing sections of the river. Unlike a traditional raft, each pair has complete control of their own craft, making every rapid feel more engaging and rewarding. With beautiful Highland scenery surrounding the river, the experience combines technical paddling with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the landscape between the action.
Flowing through the heart of Highland Perthshire, the River Tay is one of Scotland's best-known rivers for white water adventures. Its mix of steady flowing water and fun rapids makes it an excellent location for river duckies, offering enjoyable conditions for both newcomers and more experienced paddlers.
Meeting in Aberfeldy provides easy access to the river, while the surrounding area is known for its forests, hills and outdoor activities. It's an ideal destination for anyone looking to spend time on the water while exploring one of Scotland's most scenic regions.
Designed for adventurous beginners as well as experienced paddlers, no previous white water experience is required before taking part. Participants must be at least 14 years old and should feel comfortable taking part in water-based activities.
Please bring swimwear to wear beneath your wetsuit, an old pair of trainers or shoes suitable for getting wet, a towel and warm clothing for after the session. Your guides will provide full instruction before entering the river, so all you need to bring is a willingness to get involved.
Experienced river guides lead every trip with safety and enjoyment as the priority, allowing you to experience the excitement of white water while learning new paddling skills in a supportive environment. Small groups mean you'll receive plenty of individual guidance throughout the journey, helping you build confidence as you progress down the river.
Professionally maintained equipment, expert local knowledge and one of Scotland's most popular white water rivers combine to create an adventure that's both exciting and accessible. Whether it's your first experience on moving water or you're looking for a fresh challenge beyond traditional rafting, river duckies provide a memorable day on the River Tay.
A river ducky is a two-person inflatable craft that combines features of a kayak, canoe and white water raft. It's designed specifically for paddling on moving water, giving you much more control over your own route than you would have in a larger raft.
Because each ducky carries only two people, you'll work closely with your paddling partner to steer through the rapids while following guidance from your instructor on the river.
No previous kayaking, canoeing or rafting experience is required. Before launching, your guide will teach you the basic paddling techniques, how to steer the ducky and how to work together as a team.
The session is designed to help beginners gain confidence while still providing plenty of enjoyment for those who already have experience on the water.
River duckies offer a more hands-on experience because you're responsible for steering your own craft rather than relying on a larger group in a raft. This makes the activity feel more interactive and gives you greater control throughout the journey.
Your guide remains nearby at all times, offering advice and support to help you navigate the rapids safely while building your confidence on the river.
Yes. You'll be provided with a wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet, paddle and your two-person inflatable ducky, along with any other equipment needed for the activity.
Everything is professionally maintained and checked before each trip, with your guides ensuring it fits correctly before heading onto the water.
Bring swimwear to wear beneath your wetsuit, an old pair of trainers or shoes suitable for getting wet, a towel and warm clothes to change into afterwards.
Having dry clothes ready at the end of the activity makes the journey home much more comfortable, particularly during cooler weather.
The River Tay offers an excellent mix of gentle flowing water and exciting white water rapids, making it suitable for adventurous beginners while still providing plenty of fun for experienced paddlers.
Your guide selects the most appropriate sections of river based on conditions and the experience of the group, ensuring everyone enjoys the activity safely.

Absolutely awesome morning out. Klaudia was a great instructor, and it was great that it was on the river with some faster flowing water.. Only remark: It could have been a bit longer (it was more 2-hours then 3-hours), it was so much fun, we wouldn't have minded it was…
So much fun! We had a fabulous day and thoroughly recommend this - thank you x
