Enjoy Scotland’s Highlands from the water as you paddle from the calm expanse of Loch Faskally into the gentle current of the River Tummel, finishing at a secluded waterfall. This 1-hour journey combines tranquil waters, forested riverbanks, and the refreshing mist of cascading water, offering a memorable way to spend time outdoors.
Paddling across Loch Faskally starts on calm, reflective water perfect for warming up and finding your balance. Forested hills surround the loch, and you may spot local wildlife such as herons, swans, ospreys, or ducks. This open stretch allows you to move at your own pace and enjoy the serene Highland scenery.
Transitioning into the River Tummel introduces a gentle current that guides you downstream. The riverbanks bring you closer to Scotland’s forested landscapes, where sunlight filters through pine and oak trees, creating dappled patterns on the water. The current provides a relaxed flow as you follow the river’s curves toward the waterfall.
Approaching the waterfall, the sound of rushing water grows louder. Paddle up close to feel the cool mist on your face and enjoy the sight of water cascading over rocks. Pause here to rest or take photos while soaking in the surrounding moss-covered rocks and forested edges that frame the falls.
Returning to Loch Faskally, the wide expanse opens up again, offering panoramic views of hills and forests. By the end of the journey, you’ll feel refreshed and connected to the Highlands’ natural beauty.
Loch Faskally and River Tummel are located in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, providing a sheltered yet scenic environment ideal for paddling. Calm loch waters combined with the gentle river current make this route enjoyable for paddlers with some prior experience.
Meet at Armoury Car Park, near the Dam Centre, where an Adventure Paddleboarding vehicle and trailer will be on site. A small parking fee of £2 cash applies. This location gives easy access to both the loch and river while maintaining the peaceful atmosphere of the surroundings.
Some paddleboarding experience is recommended, as this route is not suitable for complete beginners. Participants should feel comfortable on a paddleboard and able to manage a short stretch of moving water.
Private sessions are available for groups up to 16, allowing a more tailored route and pace suited to your group’s preferences and confidence on the water.
Expert guides lead the paddle, offering tips for balance, paddling techniques, and navigating the river. They are knowledgeable about the local wildlife, scenic highlights, and the best spots for photos.
Combining calm loch paddling with river sections and the highlight of a waterfall, this route offers an engaging, hands-on way to explore the Scottish Highlands. The journey is designed to leave you feeling refreshed, relaxed, and inspired.
You’ll need to come prepared for time on the water, so make sure to bring essentials that keep you comfortable before, during, and after your session. A towel and a full change of clothes are recommended in case you get wet, along with swimwear or trunks to wear under a wetsuit. It’s also a good idea to wear shoes that can get wet or bring a spare pair for afterwards.
Snacks and drinks will help keep your energy up, especially on longer sessions. If you take any medication, please ensure you have it with you on the day. And, most importantly, bring a sense of adventure and a willingness to have fun—this makes all the difference on the water.
These activities are open to participants aged 12 and above. This ensures everyone taking part can safely handle the equipment and enjoy the experience. The sessions are designed to be inclusive and family-friendly while still maintaining the right level of supervision and safety for younger participants.
Anyone under 18 must have a parent or guardian either on the water with them or nearby at the viewing point for the duration of the session. This policy may vary slightly depending on the specific activity or location, but safety and supervision are always the top priority.
All sessions depend on the weather and water conditions to make sure they’re safe and fun for everyone involved. In the case of strong winds, heavy rain, or unsafe water levels, sessions may need to be postponed or moved to a more sheltered location. The decision will always be made with your safety in mind.
If a session has to be rescheduled or relocated, you’ll be contacted in advance with as much notice as possible. The team keeps a close eye on forecasts and conditions, and any changes will be clearly communicated so that you can plan your day with confidence.
This route is best suited for paddlers who have some prior experience. While the loch’s calm water provides a gentle warm-up, the River Tummel introduces a mild current that requires basic control of your board. Beginners who are not confident on a paddleboard may find it challenging to maintain balance on certain sections of the river, especially near bends or where the water narrows.
Guides provide full instruction on paddle techniques, balance, and turning before and during the paddle, allowing you to gain confidence quickly. They will adjust the pace and offer additional support if needed, ensuring you enjoy the journey safely while still being able to take in the scenery.
You will be able to paddle right up to the base of the waterfall. This offers the perfect opportunity to feel the refreshing mist, hear the sound of cascading water, and take photos from a unique perspective. The area is generally calm, providing a safe space to pause, rest, and enjoy the natural surroundings.
Safety guidance is provided throughout, including positioning your board in a stable manner while near the falls. The guides also highlight the best vantage points for photos and provide advice on interacting with the natural environment without disturbing it.
Expect to see a variety of birds such as ospreys, herons, swans, and occasional ducks. The loch is also home to smaller species that inhabit the edges, and the surrounding forests may reveal squirrels or deer if you’re quiet and observant.
Guides will point out wildlife along the route, sharing information about habits and habitats. This adds a learning element to the paddle and gives you a better understanding of the Highland ecosystem while enjoying the scenery.
