Start your underwater adventure in North Sulawesi with the PADI Open Water Diver course. This beginner-level diving certification gives you the skills and confidence to dive safely while exploring some of Indonesia’s most famous marine environments. The course is split between theory, confined water skills, and four open water dives to build your experience step by step.
Your course begins with theory sessions that cover essential diving knowledge such as pressure, safety, and underwater communication. You can either complete this section in person with your instructor or take advantage of PADI e-Learning before your arrival to save time on-site. This is followed by confined water training in a 4-metre deep dive pool at the Manado facility, where you'll learn and practise basic scuba skills in a safe, controlled environment.
Once you’re comfortable in the pool, you’ll head out for four open water dives at local reefs. These dives gradually introduce more responsibility and independence while giving you a real taste of what diving in North Sulawesi has to offer. Throughout the course, instructors keep things paced to suit your comfort level, and full dive equipment (including a computer and deluxe logbook) is included for all participants.
This course is based in Manado, on the northern tip of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Nestled between lush volcanic hills and the Bunaken Marine Park, it’s an ideal location for beginner divers with warm waters, excellent visibility, and protected sites. The dive centre includes a 4m deep purpose-built pool, classroom facilities, and direct access to both shore and boat diving.
Manado offers a gateway to explore some of the most biologically diverse waters in the Coral Triangle. The area is well known for its gentle currents, vibrant reefs, and a variety of marine life, from reef fish and turtles to critters hiding in the sand. The calm conditions and short boat rides make it especially appealing for those learning to dive.
To take part, you’ll need to be at least 10 years old and comfortable swimming in open water. No prior diving experience is needed. The course is designed for complete beginners and takes a gradual approach, allowing you to build confidence as you go.
Before starting, all participants must complete a medical questionnaire. If you have any pre-existing health conditions, medical clearance from a doctor may be required. If you're opting for the e-Learning option, it’s recommended to complete the online theory before your trip to allow more time for diving and relaxation on-site.
This centre stands out for its professional, approachable instructors and a relaxed teaching style that suits both fast learners and those who want to take their time. With lessons available in both English and Indonesian, the course is accessible and easy to follow.
They’re also well-equipped, with a dedicated dive pool for training and strong links to nearby dive sites for your open water sessions. Whether you're travelling solo or with friends, you'll benefit from a friendly atmosphere, small group sizes, and the reassurance of high safety standards throughout your course.
Yes, you can complete the theory portion of the PADI Open Water course in advance using PADI e-Learning. This allows you to study at your own pace in your preferred language before arriving in Indonesia, which is a great option if you’d like to shorten your time in the classroom during your holiday.
If you choose this option, your course at the centre will focus entirely on the confined water and open water training, allowing you to finish in 2–3 days instead of the standard 4. The e-Learning fee is paid directly to PADI online and is not included in the course price.
The minimum age to enrol in the PADI Open Water Diver course is 10 years old. While you don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer, you must be able to swim 200 metres and float or tread water for 10 minutes without any swimming aids.
These requirements are in place to ensure your safety and comfort in the water. During the course, your instructor will help you build confidence step by step, starting in the dive pool before progressing to ocean dives.
You’ll complete four open water dives in the waters surrounding Manado, which include reef slopes, volcanic sands, and coral-covered walls. The dive sites used for training are carefully chosen for their calm conditions and manageable depth, which is ideal for beginners.
Expect to see colourful reef fish, soft corals, and possibly sea turtles or clownfish during your dives. All sites are accessed easily by boat and are within a short distance from the dive centre, minimising travel time.
Yes, all necessary dive gear is included for the duration of the course. This covers a BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, dive computer, and tank. You’ll also receive a deluxe 100-page logbook to record your training and future dives.
The centre is an Aqua Lung partner, which means the equipment is well-maintained and reliable. You won’t need to bring your own gear unless you prefer to, though you're welcome to use any personal kit you already own.
The full course typically runs over 4 days. The first day focuses on theory and confined water training in the dive pool. The next three days are dedicated to skill development and open water dives, with flexibility to adjust the pace based on your progress.
If you have already completed e-Learning, the course is shortened to 2–3 days. The structure remains the same, but more time is spent in the water rather than the classroom.
Safety is the top priority throughout the course. All instructors are qualified PADI professionals who follow strict safety protocols. Training begins in a controlled environment—a purpose-built 4m deep dive pool—before progressing to the ocean.
You’ll be taught emergency procedures such as air-sharing, controlled ascents, and dealing with equipment issues. The use of dive computers is included in the course to help monitor your depth and time underwater.
Water visibility around Manado is generally excellent, often ranging between 15 to 30 metres. This makes it ideal for learning, as you’ll be able to clearly see your instructor, dive buddies, and surroundings.
Water temperatures typically range from 27°C to 30°C year-round, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit. The warm, calm conditions contribute to a comfortable and relaxed learning environment for beginner divers.
