Itinerary
2-Day Course
The 2-day course begins at 09:15 each day with an introduction to objectives, equipment checks, and a detailed plan based on weather conditions. Day 1 covers foundational navigation skills, terrain assessment, and safe movement techniques, such as using walking poles and handling scree or boulder fields. Throughout the day, you’ll receive practical guidance on managing mountain challenges, with breaks to discuss safety tips and layering systems.
The day wraps up by 16:30–17:00 with a review of progress. Day 2 focuses on route planning, refining navigation techniques, and practising basic ropework for steep or exposed terrain. The course concludes with a debrief and personalised feedback.
3-Day Course
The 3-day course builds on the 2-day structure, adding more advanced ropework, weather interpretation, and scrambling practice on steeper ground. Day 3 includes participant-led navigation and scenarios to enhance confidence in handling challenging situations, finishing with a review to consolidate learning.
4-Day Course
The 4-day course expands further, offering participants the chance to lead routes with instructor support on the final day. Skills like safeguarding on technical terrain, advanced scrambling, and navigating in varied conditions are put into practice. Each day concludes with a debrief, allowing for tailored advice to prepare you for independent mountaineering.
Location
The Lake District National Park provides an ideal setting, with courses taking place across varied terrains from the southern fells around Langdale to the northern ridges near Keswick.
Routes are flexible and tailored to suit your location, preferences, and logistics, ensuring you get the best mix of landscapes and challenges.
Prerequisites
Participants should have a good base level of fitness and be prepared for long days on uneven terrain. No prior mountaineering knowledge is needed, as all skills will be taught on the course.
