The day begins with an introduction to climbing in the UK, including the use of guidebooks, apps, and understanding crag etiquette. Instructors explain access, Leave No Trace principles, and the role of mountaineering councils.
Practical exercises cover basic climbing skills such as low-level bouldering, tying knots, belaying, spotting, and abseiling. Instructors provide hands-on guidance, correcting techniques and offering personalised feedback throughout the day.
A proportion of the course is spent climbing on natural rock at Avon Gorge, allowing you to apply skills in a real-world setting. By the end of the day, you will be confident in basic climbing safety, ready to attempt a climbing wall belay test, and prepared to progress to a Rock Skills Intermediate course.
Avon Gorge, Bristol, is a renowned climbing venue offering a variety of routes suitable for beginners. The site is easily accessible, with parking nearby and clear instructions provided prior to the course.
The gorge combines natural beauty with practical learning opportunities. With safe, well-maintained rock faces and diverse terrain, it offers an ideal environment for developing climbing skills under expert supervision.
Anyone aged 12 or over can join. No prior climbing experience is needed, but a basic level of fitness is recommended to safely navigate the rock.
Medical conditions affecting mobility or balance should be discussed beforehand. Instructors adapt activities to suit individual needs while ensuring safety and engagement.
Mountain Training-qualified instructors deliver a structured, hands-on learning experience, focusing on safety and technique. Small groups ensure personalised attention and effective skill development.
All candidates are registered with the Mountain Training Association Candidate Management System (CMS) and receive a pre-course information pack, including a 15% discount with Cotswolds Outdoors and Snow + Rock. Practical skills gained here are nationally recognised and transferable to other climbing environments.
Anyone aged 12 or older can attend. Beginners with no climbing experience are welcome, and instructors provide step-by-step guidance to ensure safety throughout the day.
Those with minimal experience gain the confidence and skills required to progress to intermediate courses, while more experienced climbers can consolidate foundational techniques.
All essential climbing equipment, including harness, helmet, and belay devices, is provided.
Attendees should wear comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor activity and sturdy footwear. A kit advisory is sent before the course, including suggestions for waterproofs and layers appropriate to weather conditions.
No previous climbing experience is needed. The course is designed to teach all the fundamentals, from tying knots to belaying and abseiling safely on natural rock.
Candidates who already have some indoor experience can use the course to strengthen technical skills and confidence before attempting outdoor climbs.
The course runs for one full day, typically from 09:30 to 16:30. Time includes both classroom-style instruction and practical outdoor climbing sessions.
Breaks are built in for comfort and refreshment, allowing attendees to focus fully during skills practice and climbing exercises.
Courses are weather dependent. If unsafe conditions arise, notification is sent at least 72 hours in advance, and rescheduling options are offered.
Instructors may adjust the day’s activities to maximise learning while keeping everyone safe, including relocating exercises to safer areas if necessary.
You will learn fundamental movement techniques, knot tying, belaying, spotting, abseiling, and environmental awareness.
