Explore one of Malta’s quietest corners on this private nature walking tour through Mistra Valley and Selmun. Over 5½ hours you’ll walk around 7 km, learning about local flora, geology, and landscape history from a fully qualified botanist, with an optional swim stop in Mistra Bay if conditions allow. It’s a great choice if you like gentle but interesting terrain, coastal views, and having a guide who can actually name the plants you’re walking past.
Your guide will collect you from your accommodation and drive to the north-east of Malta, near Mellieħa, where the walk begins. The route starts in Mistra Valley, following farm tracks and paths between terraced fields and traditional stone walls. You’ll see how agriculture and native vegetation sit side by side here, with your botanist pointing out Mediterranean garrigue, maquis shrubland, and seasonal wildflowers such as irises, orchids, rock roses, and aromatic shrubs. This section is perfect for easing into the distance and getting a feel for the landscape.
From here the route drops towards Mistra Bay, a small shingle bay framed by low cliffs. If the weather and sea state are suitable, you can take a 30–40 minute swim stop, or simply enjoy the coastal views towards St Paul’s Islands and Comino. After the bay, the walk continues up towards Selmun, where the terrain becomes a little steeper and rockier underfoot for a short section. You’ll pass Selmun Palace, the remains of Fort Campbell, and the old rural core of Selmun with its traditional farmhouses and chapel. Along the way your guide will also show you paleo-Christian tombs and a natural doline (crater-like rock depression), while highlighting endemic plant species and how they survive in this exposed coastal environment.
The final part of the walk follows clifftop and hillside paths with wide sea views and a good sense of elevation. This is where you really see how the coastline, valleys, and agricultural land fit together. The route loops back towards the starting area before your guide returns you by vehicle to your accommodation. Throughout the day the pace is kept relaxed, with regular pauses for photos, plant identification, and short breaks.
This walk takes place around Mistra Valley, Mistra Bay, and Selmun, on the north-east coast of Malta, about 2 km from Mellieħa and within easy reach of St Paul’s Bay. The area combines coastal cliffs, cultivated valley floors, and low limestone plateaux, making it ideal if you want a nature-heavy experience without long transfers. For map purposes, Mistra Bay is a good central reference point for the route.
This tour is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness who is comfortable walking around 7 km over varied terrain. Expect some uneven rocky sections, a short stretch of rock stepping, and an inclined footpath of around 15 minutes, but no scrambling or technical ground. Good walking shoes or light hiking footwear are important, and this is not recommended for guests with significant mobility issues. You should be happy to be outdoors for several hours with limited formal facilities on the route.
You’re not just following a marked trail – you’re walking with a local botanist who specialises in Maltese flora and knows this corner of the island in detail. The tour is completely private, so the pace, number of stops, and focus (plants, views, photography, or a mix) can be adjusted to suit your group. Door-to-door transfers from Malta or Gozo are included, so you don’t have to worry about logistics or parking near small lanes and bays. If you’re looking for a nature-focused walking experience away from the more crowded coastal paths, this route through Mistra Valley and Selmun is an excellent option.
