Ready to move beyond top-roping and start leading climbs? This session is designed for two people who are confident top-rope climbers and want to develop the skills needed for lead climbing. Covering everything from lead belaying and clipping techniques to managing falls and problem-solving, this course provides a structured and supportive environment to progress.
This four-hour session will begin with an overview of lead climbing, discussing key differences from top-rope climbing and the new skills required. You'll start by learning how to belay a lead climber safely, including how to manage slack, anticipate falls, and catch a partner effectively. Belay technique is a critical skill, so time will be spent refining this before moving on to climbing practice.
Once belay skills are in place, you'll focus on efficient clipping techniques and body positioning while leading. Good clipping habits reduce wasted energy and improve overall climbing efficiency. You'll also cover common mistakes such as back-clipping and Z-clipping, with practical exercises to ensure you can recognise and correct them.
Falling is a natural part of lead climbing, and this session will introduce safe fall practice in a controlled environment. You'll learn how to manage falls, build confidence in taking them, and understand how to fall with minimal risk. Throughout the course, your instructor will provide personalised feedback and guidance to help you feel more in control on the wall.
The session takes place in south London at a dedicated indoor climbing centre. The venue provides a safe and well-equipped space for learning, with a variety of lead routes to practise on.
With modern facilities and experienced instruction, it’s an ideal environment for building confidence in lead climbing.
Participants must be competent top-rope climbers, regularly climbing at least 6a. A good understanding of basic climbing techniques and belaying is essential.
You should also be comfortable with indoor climbing movement.
The course is led by a qualified Rock Climbing Development Instructor (RCDI) and Development Coach with a strong focus on providing a welcoming, inclusive, and safe space for all climbers. With experience coaching climbers of different backgrounds, the instructor specialises in helping women and those affected by mental health challenges gain confidence in their climbing.
Alongside technical instruction, the coaching approach helps participants develop independence, improve their technique, and build trust in their climbing ability. With tailored guidance, practical skills development, and a supportive environment, this session ensures climbers leave feeling more prepared for their lead climbing progression.
No prior lead climbing experience is required, but you must have a solid foundation in top-rope climbing.
You should already know how to belay safely and be comfortable climbing at least 6a on an indoor wall.
