Built for children who want to surf regularly and continue improving over time, this weekly surf club combines structured coaching with fun water sessions designed to build confidence, friendships, and surfing ability in a supportive environment. Running on Saturdays throughout the warmer months in Newquay, the sessions are suitable for both complete beginners and younger surfers with previous experience looking to progress further.
Each session begins beside the beach with equipment collection, group organisation, and a briefing tailored around the day’s surf conditions and coaching focus. Children are grouped according to confidence and ability wherever possible, helping instructors adapt sessions to suit both newer surfers and those already developing their skills. Being located directly on Fistral Beach keeps things simple for parents and allows children to get into the water quickly without long walks carrying equipment.
Time in the sea focuses on improving surf technique through regular practice and structured coaching exercises. Beginners work on the fundamentals of paddling, catching waves, and standing up consistently, while more experienced surfers continue progressing with positioning, wave selection, and improving confidence in different surf conditions. Sessions remain fun and active throughout while still maintaining a strong focus on safety and progression.
Across the season, children also benefit from video analysis sessions, monthly feedback, and opportunities to build friendships with other young surfers who share a similar interest in the sport. Coaches encourage confidence both in and around the sea while helping participants develop stronger surf awareness over time through regular water sessions.
Most sessions take place on Fistral Beach, one of the UK’s best-known surf beaches thanks to its reliable conditions and spacious sandy shoreline. When conditions require a more sheltered environment, sessions may also use nearby Tolcarne Beach to provide the safest and most suitable waves for younger surfers.
Newquay’s north Cornwall coastline has a strong surf culture and provides an excellent environment for children learning watersports regularly. Direct access to the beach, nearby facilities, and dedicated surf areas help create a relaxed and supportive atmosphere throughout the season.
The surf club is suitable for children aged between 8 and 16 years old. Sessions welcome both complete beginners and children with previous surfing experience who want to continue progressing through regular coaching.
Participants should feel reasonably comfortable in the water and ideally be able to swim at least 25 metres independently before joining the club sessions.
Regular weekly coaching helps children improve far more consistently than occasional standalone lessons, allowing instructors to monitor progression over time while building confidence gradually in the sea. Structured sessions combined with smaller coaching groups help young surfers feel supported while still keeping the atmosphere enjoyable and social.
Experienced surf coaches, quality equipment, direct beach access, and a strong focus on water safety all help create a reliable and welcoming environment for children throughout the surf season. Monthly video analysis and feedback sessions also provide an extra layer of progression support as confidence develops.
