ISA Training

Endorsed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the official global authority for surfing, the ISA Surf Coaching & Instructing Educational Program sets the worldwide benchmark for the accreditation of Coaches and Instructors within the surf school industry.

This program is tailored to enhance the competencies, expertise, and insight of those keen to adopt a scientific methodology in surf coaching and instruction.

Key Goals of the ISA Coaching & Instructing Program include:

  • Establishing a universal framework for Coaching and Instructing Courses, aimed at elevating the safety and effectiveness of surf instruction globally.
  • Expanding a comprehensive knowledge base through educational programs for Coaches and Instructors to utilise.
  • Providing a platform for Coaches and Instructors to secure employment, along with support and encouragement.
  • Promoting surf Coaching and Instructing as a globally unified, highly professional occupation with rigorous standards.

This program is continually evolving to incorporate various facets of professional development in the field of surfing. ISA Coaches and Instructors are required to comply with local laws and regulations where they operate. ISA Instructors need to be at least 16 years old to obtain accreditation but must work under the supervision of an ISA Instructor aged 18 or older. To instruct independently, an ISA Instructor must be at least 18 years old.

This level one course is the cutting industry standard for surf Instructors at quality surf schools around the world. This course has the broadest international appeal.

  • Risk management, safety, and identifying lesson hazards.
  • Planning and executing successful lessons.
  • Surfboard skills, techniques, and student performance assessment.

What To Expect

Participants will engage in detailed sessions covering the role of a surf coach, emergency action processes, lesson planning, communication skills, and coaching methods. The course also includes practical assessments, ensuring that all aspiring instructors are well-prepared for real-world teaching scenarios.


The course is hosted at Gupton Farm, Pembrokeshire: Marine Centre Of Excellence Saundersfoot, a prime location near Freshwater West, one of Wales’s top beaches.


  • Minimum age of 16 years (under 18s must work with a supervising instructor until 18).
  • Good fitness level, confidence in left and right wave navigation, and strong swimming skills.
  • Completion of SLSGB/ISA/ILS Instructor Water Safety certification and 20 hours of practical work experience (can be arranged with us).

Yes we are. We have £10 million public liability insurance and all instructors & surf crew are fully qualified & members of the NGB.

There are no hidden costs you will have to keep up-to-date with your membership to the ISA, which is the international governing body.

Our Pembrokeshire courses are held at our activity centre on Gupton Farm, Castlemartin, SA71 5HW.

Accommodation is not included in the cost of the course but we can recommend great value for money accommodation in the nearby area.

Food is not included, but there are local cafes nearby and a small supermarket about a 15-minute drive away. If you do need to heat up your food, we do have a microwave available onsite and don’t worry there is a kettle available for unlimited tea and coffee.

  • Wetsuit and surfboard (if you have them, if not both can be provided free of charge).
  • Towel/dryrobe (there are no changing facilities available at our beaches).
  • Paper and a pen, sunscreen (if required), refillable water bottle, lunch.

Yes! You must be able to show and understand the rules of priority, be able to negotiate the line up and show confidence in turning left and right. We also require you to be swim fit and a confident and competent swimmer.

ISA Level 1 requires 20 hours. You can arrange this with us if you wish. Once you have completed your assisting hours all information will be sent to the relevant governing body who will then process your certification

Yes, all ISA courses require an up to date lifesaving qualification too which can be completed before or after your course. If you are interested in doing your lifesaving course with us please let us know upon booking.
