The trek begins with a drive to Sundarijal and a climb into Shivapuri National Park, reaching the village of Chisapani for the first night. Day two follows forest trails through the park towards Nagarkot, arriving in time for sunset over the hills, and the final day starts with sunrise before the descent to Changunarayan and the drive back to Kathmandu.
Each day combines several hours of walking on established trails with genuine viewpoints and cultural stops, making it a manageable introduction to multi-day trekking near the Kathmandu Valley. Overnight stops are in simple lodges and tea houses at Chisapani and Nagarkot, with twin or multi-share rooms and hot food available each evening.
Linking Chisapani, Nagarkot and Changunarayan into a single three-day route gives a fuller sense of the hills around Kathmandu than a single day trip, without needing to travel far from the city or gain serious altitude.
Guides know the trails through Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park well, including where wildlife and birdlife are most likely to be seen, and take care of permits, lodges and logistics throughout so the days can be spent walking rather than planning.
The route runs entirely within the hills surrounding the Kathmandu Valley, beginning with a hotel pickup and a short drive to Sundarijal at the edge of Shivapuri National Park before crossing to the ridge at Nagarkot and finishing near Changunarayan on the valley floor. Forest, farmland and small settlements make up most of the scenery along the way.
Chisapani and Nagarkot are both well known viewpoints for Himalayan sunrises, while Changunarayan adds a strong cultural close to the trek, sitting on a hilltop rich in centuries-old temple architecture, before the drive back to Kathmandu closes the loop.
Overnight stops on this three-day route are in simple lodges and tea houses at Chisapani and Nagarkot, typical of the trails around the Kathmandu Valley, with twin or multi-share rooms rather than private hotel-style accommodation.
Hot meals are available at both stops each evening, and the lodges provide a comfortable if basic base for the sunrise views at Chisapani and Nagarkot. Warm layers are more useful than a full sleeping bag on this route, since the altitude gained is modest compared with treks further into the mountains.
