Challenge yourself with an active weekend exploring two of South Wales' best outdoor destinations. Combining a demanding mountain hike with a full day at BikePark Wales, this three-day trip is aimed at guests with a good level of fitness who enjoy spending time outdoors and sharing the experience with like-minded people.
Your base for the weekend is Merthyr Tydfil, providing easy access to both the Brecon Beacons National Park and BikePark Wales. With accommodation, breakfast, a qualified mountain guide, bike hire and uplift pass all included, everything is arranged so you can focus on making the most of the weekend.
Combining hiking and mountain biking into one organised weekend gives you the opportunity to experience two of South Wales' best-known adventure activities without having to organise the logistics yourself. From the guided mountain walk through to the uplift-assisted riding at BikePark Wales, the weekend has been planned to maximise time outdoors while keeping everything straightforward.
The relaxed group atmosphere makes it easy to join whether you're travelling alone, with a partner or alongside friends. Throughout the weekend you'll be spending time with people who enjoy similar activities, creating a sociable experience both on the mountains and back at the hotel.
Arrive at The Castle Hotel in the centre of Merthyr Tydfil and settle into your room before meeting the rest of the group. The hotel provides a convenient base for the weekend and gives everyone the opportunity to get to know each other before the main activities begin.
The evening is free to enjoy the town, have dinner together if you wish and prepare your equipment for the following day's hike.
Saturday is dedicated to one of the Brecon Beacons' classic mountain walks. Accompanied by a fully qualified mountain guide, you'll tackle the Four Peaks route, taking in the summits of Fan y Big, Cribyn, Pen y Fan and Corn Du.
The hike normally takes around seven hours and includes several steep sections, making it a rewarding challenge for anyone with a good level of fitness. After returning to the hotel to recover, there's the option to head back out after dark to enjoy the Brecon Beacons' famous night skies. If enough guests are interested, an optional guided stargazing experience can be arranged at Libanus Observatory for an additional charge.
A more relaxed morning leads into a full session at BikePark Wales, one of the UK's leading mountain biking centres. Bike hire, protective equipment and an uplift pass are all included, allowing you to spend your time riding the trails rather than climbing back to the top.
Following the biking session, the group can enjoy lunch at a nearby pub before heading home. If you're still looking for one final adventure, there's also the optional opportunity to visit Zip World and experience its high-speed zip line before the weekend comes to an end.
The weekend includes two nights at The Castle Hotel in the centre of Merthyr Tydfil. While simple in style, it offers comfortable accommodation, highly regarded breakfasts and a practical location close to shops, restaurants and local amenities.
Twin and single room options are available depending on your booking. Staying in the town centre means you can easily enjoy the evening after returning from the mountains without needing additional transport.
This is the most physically demanding part of the weekend and is intended for people with a good level of fitness. The route normally takes around seven hours and includes several steep climbs while visiting four of the Brecon Beacons' most recognisable summits.
You don't need technical mountaineering experience, but you should already be comfortable walking for extended periods across uneven mountain terrain while carrying your own day pack.
The guided walk visits Fan y Big, Cribyn, Pen y Fan and Corn Du, creating one of the Brecon Beacons' classic mountain routes.
These summits provide varied terrain throughout the day, along with panoramic views across South Wales whenever weather conditions allow.

Everything is arranged before your session at BikePark Wales, making it easy to arrive and start riding without bringing your own bike.

Instead of repeatedly climbing uphill, you'll spend much more time enjoying the downhill trails, making the most of your day at BikePark Wales.

Anyone wanting coaching should arrange this as an optional extra before arriving where possible.

Your mountain guide has the final decision regarding safety and may refuse participation if footwear or waterproofs aren't suitable for the conditions.
