Your day begins with a conditions check and the selection of the best launch point for the day. Along the way you will learn how local spearfishers read the coastline, from how wind and swell affect visibility to where bass, pollack, mullet, wrasse, plaice, cuttlefish and lobster are likely to hold.
If you land a fish, your guide will show you humane dispatch, cleaning and preparation, plus advice on storage and cooking. Every trip is different, and no responsible guide can promise a catch, but every effort is made to put you in productive water.
Cornwall's Atlantic coastline offers some of the most varied spearfishing ground in the UK, from reef and kelp forests to sandy bays and rocky headlands. Conditions can change dramatically over just a few miles, so local knowledge of where wind, swell and tides work together is central to a good day in the water.
Meet at the Headland Hotel on Headland Road in Newquay, with dive sites chosen on the day according to the forecast. You will receive the precise meeting details when you book. Parking is available at the hotel, and the western corner of the grounds overlooks Fistral Beach.
New to spearfishing? As long as you are comfortable swimming in the sea and have previously snorkelled in open water, your guide will introduce the equipment and techniques needed to begin safely and responsibly. Already an experienced spearo? Think of the day as having a knowledgeable local in the water with you, whether you bring your own kit or use the provided equipment.

From surf coaching to snorkelling and coasteering, the focus is on building confidence and skill in the water through tailored, one-to-one experiences. The aim is not simply to help you catch a fish, but to give you the knowledge to hunt safely and ethically on Cornwall's coastline.
Your guide reviews wind, swell, tides and underwater visibility before choosing the best launch point for the day. Cornwall's coastline changes quickly, and selecting the right venue is often the difference between a productive dive and a disappointing swim. If conditions allow, a second site may be planned for later in the day.
Whether you are new to spearfishing or visiting without your own kit, you will be fitted with a premium Riffe speargun, long-blade freediving fins, weight belt, float system and wetsuit. Your guide covers speargun safety, including treating every speargun as loaded, keeping your finger off the trigger until ready, never pointing at anything you are not prepared to destroy, and always being certain of your target and what lies beyond it.
Shore dives into Cornwall's clear water put you alongside your guide as you hunt reef, kelp and sand habitats. You will discuss where different species hold, how to identify productive ground, and basic hunting techniques and fish approach. Depending on the season and conditions you may encounter bass, pollack, mullet, wrasse, plaice, cuttlefish, lobster, thornback rays, dogfish and Atlantic grey seals.
When the forecast and tides allow, the day often continues at a second location to maximise your time in productive water. Rather than spending your holiday interpreting forecasts and local marks, your guide chooses suitable venues so you can focus on hunting. Experienced spearfishers are welcome to bring their own equipment if preferred.
Landing a fish is only part of the process. If you are successful, your guide will show you how to humanely dispatch your catch, clean and prepare it, remove scales where appropriate, and advise on storage and cooking so you get the best from your fish. You will also cover species identification, minimum landing sizes, fisheries regulations and ethical harvesting, ensuring the day is conducted responsibly and with respect for the marine environment.
No. If you are confident swimming in the sea and have previous open-water snorkelling experience, this experience is suitable for complete beginners. Your guide will introduce the speargun, fins, weight belt, float system and basic hunting techniques in a controlled, responsible way.
Experienced spearfishers are equally welcome. The day adapts to your level, whether you need foundational coaching or a knowledgeable local partner in the water.
Yes. A premium Riffe speargun from California is provided along with a wetsuit, long-blade freediving fins, mask, snorkel, weight belt, float and flag system, diving knife and all other essential equipment for the day.
Experienced spearfishers visiting Cornwall may bring their own kit if they prefer, but there is no need to travel with gear. Everything required for a full day in the water is included in the booking.
Dive locations are selected on the day according to wind, swell, tides and underwater visibility. The objective is always to choose the safest and most productive conditions available rather than committing to a fixed venue in advance.

Yes. Experienced spearfishers visiting Cornwall without wanting to travel with kit can use the provided Riffe speargun and full equipment set. If you prefer your own speargun, fins or wetsuit, you are welcome to bring them.
Your guide will still cover local conditions, site selection and species knowledge regardless of whether you use provided kit or your own. The day is tailored to your experience either way.
You should be comfortable swimming in the sea and have previous experience snorkelling in open water. Most hunting takes place in relatively shallow water, typically within around 10 metres, but you will be in the ocean for several hours across the day.
A reasonable level of fitness helps you make the most of the experience, especially when moving between sites or spending extended periods in the water. If you have any medical concerns, discuss them with your guide before booking.
Site selection is always driven by safety first. If wind, swell or visibility make certain venues unsuitable, your guide will choose an alternative launch point where conditions are better. Cornwall's varied coastline often means workable water can be found even when one stretch looks unfavourable.
In rare cases where no safe diving is possible, your guide will discuss rescheduling options with you directly. Spearfishing is a weather-dependent activity and flexibility on the day is part of the experience.
