Experience an eight-day Lemosho camping expedition with extra time on the Shira Plateau for acclimatisation before Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu. Western rainforest starts stay quiet, then you join Kilimanjaro's most photogenic southern valleys on the way to Uhuru Peak.
The additional Shira day spreads altitude gain more gently than seven-day schedules while you still enjoy Lava Tower logic, the Barranco Wall, and midnight summit bid from Barafu. See the itinerary below for each camp from Big Tree through Mweka Gate certificates.
This is our go-to Lemosho recommendation for guests who want maximum acclimatisation without committing to the full Northern Circuit, and crews are sized for smooth camp moves on long Shira days. Guides will adjust pace or turn a climber back if altitude symptoms demand it, even near summit night.
Clear briefings explain what each climate zone feels like so you pack smartly, and the Mweka Gate celebration with your crew is the warm finish that turns first-time summiters into advocates for the mountain.
Drive to Londorossi Gate for registration, then hike misty western rainforest to Big Tree Camp. Birdlife and colobus monkeys reward quiet walking on this uncrowded start.
First camp sets the tone for a scenic rather than rushed expedition.
Leave forest for moorland ridges climbing toward the Shira Plateau with views of Kibo's western breach. Camp on the plateau as sunsets paint volcanic rock gold.
Extra Lemosho time begins here compared with shorter itineraries.
Gentle plateau walking among heather meadows supports acclimatisation without extreme elevation jumps. Guides may add short exploratory walks near camp.
This dedicated day helps your body adjust before Lava Tower.
Climb to Lava Tower at 4,630 m for lunch, then descend into Barranco Valley beneath the Great Wall. Alien giant groundsels surround camp.
Classic climb-high sleep-low logic supports summit success.
Morning scramble up Barranco Wall opens glacier views, then traverse to Karanga for lunch and rest. Shorter day preserves energy for Barafu.
Photographers love the wall section in clear weather.
Alpine desert trail climbs to Barafu Base Camp by afternoon. Early dinner and summit kit prep precede a short sleep before midnight departure.
Cold wind here reminds you to keep down jackets accessible.
Midnight scree climb to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then descent via Barafu to Mweka Camp in forest. The emotional peak of the expedition lands on this marathon day.
Guides emphasise safe footing on tired legs during descent.
Rainforest walk to Mweka Gate for certificates and crew songs, then road transfer to town. Recovery meals and sleep feel incredible after summit week.
Share stories with teammates while photos are still on your phone.
We meet you at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for the pre-climb briefing and kit check. Both towns are about an hour from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and we can arrange airport transfers for your arrival and departure days. With eight days on the mountain, it's worth arriving at least a night early so jet lag has worn off before you reach the trailhead.
On the first trekking morning we drive west for roughly three to four hours to Londorossi Gate, passing through farmland and forest plantations on the mountain's quieter western side. After park registration you continue to the Lemosho trailhead and walk into the rainforest toward Big Tree Camp. The trek finishes at Mweka Gate above Moshi, where we pick you up and drive you back to town.
All seven nights on Lemosho are fully supported camping with guest tents, a mess tent, and crew kitchen at each stop from Big Tree through Shira, Barranco, Karanga, Barafu, and Mweka. The extra Shira plateau day means more time in open camps where sun and wind vary quickly, so pack a sleeping bag suited to cold Barafu nights even after mild afternoons on the plateau.
Porters move your main bag while you carry water, snacks, and rain gear in a daypack. Standard tents sleep two guests unless you arrange a private tent upgrade ahead of travel; crew strike camp early on long walking days so tents are ready when you finish hiking.
Extra Shira days mean more sun and wind exposure on plateau camps, so sun protection and wind layers matter as much as summit insulation. Pack waterproof boots, gaiters, -10C sleeping bag, complete layering system, rain jacket and trousers, headlamp with spare batteries, trekking poles, and a comfortable daypack for eight consecutive mountain days.
Photographers often love this itinerary, so bring spare memory cards and protect lenses from dust on scree slopes. Guides re-check summit kit at Barafu because weather can shift quickly from pleasant plateau afternoons to freezing rim winds within 24 hours.
The extra Shira Plateau day spreads altitude gain more gently than seven-day schedules, which many climbers prefer for first attempts on Kilimanjaro. Lemosho western forest also feels quieter before Barranco crowds merge on the southern circuit.
You still cover the same summit path to Uhuru Peak, but arrive at Barafu better rested after additional acclimatisation walking near Shira camps. Photographers especially enjoy the slower pace across plateau sunsets and volcanic landscapes.
This route is a trek with a Barranco Wall scramble that uses hands and feet without ropes. Summit night is steep scree walking guided at a slow pace with frequent rest stops for water and breathing.
No rock climbing background is required if you arrive hill-fit and follow crew advice on hydration and pole pole pacing. Guides coach nervous hikers through the wall section in daylight before summit eve.
Tents, mess tent, sleeping mats, and kitchen equipment are supplied by the mountain crew for all seven camping nights. You bring your own sleeping bag, clothing, and toiletries in your duffel bag for the expedition.
Daypacks carry water, snacks, and rain gear while porters leapfrog camp ahead of the group. Evening tent checks help everyone stay dry when western forest moisture meets alpine wind higher up the route.
Park entry, camping, and rescue fees are paid at Londorossi Gate under current Tanzania National Parks rules when you register for the trek. Guides streamline paperwork so you understand each payment before hiking begins.
Keep passport copies and USD for gate charges accessible on day one. National park tariffs may change independently of your operator package, so confirm current rates closer to departure if needed.
Barafu wake-up near midnight leads to a slow scree ascent toward Stella Point and Uhuru Peak around sunrise on the crater rim. You then descend past Barafu to Mweka Camp in the forest zone the same day, trading ice and rock for birdsong on the long downhill.
Expect the longest day of the expedition with twelve or more hours on the trail including breaks. Guides emphasise safe footing on tired legs during scree descent because slips are more common after the emotional summit high.
You will be hiking on consecutive days with a demanding summit push, so train on hills and stairs for two months before travel. Plateau days feel easier than Barranco or Barafu stages, but altitude accumulates across the week.
Weekend hikers with regular mileage usually adapt faster than occasional gym users. Share health conditions with us early so we can advise on training targets before you book flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Waterproof boots, thermal layers, down jacket, rain shell, hat, gloves, headlamp, and -10C sleeping bag are essential for eight-day Lemosho. Sunscreen and sunglasses protect you on long Shira crossings where UV is strong and shade is scarce.
Bring spare headlamp batteries because cold summit air drains power quickly overnight. Gaiters help on muddy western forest sections when rain soaks the trail in the first days of the trek.
Insurance covering 6,000 metre trekking, medical evacuation, and emergency care is strongly recommended for Kilimanjaro expeditions. Without it, emergency costs are entirely yours and can escalate quickly if descent or hospital care is needed.
Buy suitable cover before booking flights to Tanzania and keep documents accessible in your daypack. Check that your policy covers adventure trekking explicitly, not just general travel medical cover.
Tipping guides, cooks, and porters is customary at trek end on eight-day expeditions with a larger crew footprint. Briefing explains typical pooled amounts based on team size and roles before you leave Moshi for Londorossi Gate.
Hand contributions to the lead guide at Mweka Gate during the celebration ceremony after certificates are issued. Tips are separate from your package price and support the livelihood of mountain crews throughout the season.
Solo departures are accepted with minimum group size one on open dates for eight-day Lemosho. Tent sharing follows camp logistics unless private tent upgrades are arranged in advance with our reservations team.
Private eight-day Lemosho climbs let you choose start dates that fit your flights when scheduled groups do not match your calendar. Solo guests receive the same safety monitoring and meals as larger teams across the western and southern stages.
